Malayalam cinema in Middle East – Big market is not explored

I am in gulf for last 10 years and found almost all big release of bollywood/tamil/telugu films are released simultaneously with India release but never found a Malayalam movie released here along with kerala. On the total population in gulf morethan half of them are from kerala and Hindi/Tamil/Telugu speaking people are lesser than malayalees here. Still the makers are not interested in this market.

Heard that around 50 lacs are paid for Middle east release of Malayalam movies and less movies are released here after getting good reports from kerala. IMO if the makers wants they can get morethan 1cr rupees easily from this market for a good film. For eg: Drishyam is making good money here, may this will be an eye opener for the makers and they will exploit this market well.

Now the calculation of getting money :

Average ticket rate per person in theatre is AED 20 = INR 340

Morethan 10 Lacs people living in gulf, most of them are bachelors (married one without family status is termed as Bachelors here). Out of this even 5% comes to see the movie, it will be a huge amount.

The market will be same or bigger than Malabar area share.

GCC Countries – Oman, UAE, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait and KSA.


Out of the above 6 countries only Saudi has not permitted to open cinema theatre in the country. Balance 5 countries have cinema halls which are showing English, Arabic, Hindi and south Indian films. The major films showing in GCC are English, Hindi and Malayalam.
As all knows there are more than 2 million malayalees living in GCC out of this may be around 50,000 peoples are having benefited with going to theatre because of high ticket rate, distance, no time, busy work schedule etc. But they all are watching films in CD’s or in TV.

Jayasurya and Nyla Usha in Punyalan AgarbathisIt's time to explore newer markets for films, feels filmmaker Ranjith Sankar.

The Malayalam film industry virtually came to a standstill after television channels decided to slow down the purchase of satellite rights of movies.

Filmmaker Ranjith Sankar, who shot to fame with Passenger and also directed Arjunan Sakshi and Molly Aunty Rocks, made some suggestions to get things moving again.

According to him, the Malayalam film industry needs to explore the hugely untapped overseas market.

"My film, Punyalan Agarbathis had its premiere in Dubai recently and the response to the film was beyond all expectations.

In fact, we have released the film in countries like Japan and Hong Kong.

Our films should open there on a regular basis in the future. It could be a fabulous revenue source, says Ranjith,

The Dubai premiere of Punyalan Agarbathis was attended by the films lead pair, Jayasurya and Nyla Usha.

Punyalan Agarbathis is produced jointly by Ranjith Sankar and Jayasurya. The film released last year in India, and has been a huge success.
