Thanks for the review....
Nowadays, it's not often that we get to see Malayalam movies that are sensibly named. Gladly, Mosayile Kuthirameenukal falls under this group. Kuthirameen, which means swordfish, is known for selfishness; Mosa in Lakshadweep’s local dialect means big waves. The movie is a tale of love, friendship, trust and the innate selfishness in people, set on the backdrop of a paradise nestled in the Laccadive seas.
Alex, a filthy-rich spoilt brat, is an orphan who has no aim in his life. He’s serving a one year term in prison thanks to his wayward way of living that landed him there. Unable to cope up with the life in prison, Alex jailbreaks, and on the way meets another inmate Akbar, who’s very evasive by nature. They set forth on a Journey to Lakshadweep under certain circumstances, where they realize that Kuthirameenukal are not as selfish as they look.
The film has shaky beginning, however it steadies itself up gradually and picks pace just when we think that it is running out of steam. There are two love tracks in the movie, one between Akbar and Isa, and the other between Alex and Deena. Latter one, though short, had scope for a little bit of improvement, whereas the former one is sheer poetry. Love is in the air when Akbar and Isa are on screen.
The film gives insights on the innate selfishness in people and the purpose of our lives. Almost all the characters have shades of grey, which brings the movie closer to our lives. There are a few truly endearing scenes in the movie; to name a few - The way Isa asks Akbar if he could marry her, the way Akbar says that he’s happy with his life in the Island, the way Deena gives a bunch of her hair for Alex to smell so that he could escape from aftermath of sea sickness, and the way Alex discovers the true purpose of life.
Sunny Wayne impresses as Akbar Ali. The character doesn't demand anything out of the world; he sinks in to it by carrying an aura of mystery around him. Asif Ali is comfortable as Alex; nothing ordinary and nothing exceptional, he just keeps on doing what he used to do. With her expressive eyes, Swati Reddy is brilliant as Isa. Janani Iyer as Deena doesn't have much to do other than to look pretty.
Cinematography is excellent, especially the parts shot in Lakshadweep. However, some portions shot in and around Kochi leaves a feeling that the sky has been edited in a bad way (may be because the sky was overcast and the technical team tried too hard to make it blue). The music and background scores deserves special mention as well. The only song in the movie, that narrates the Akbar-Isa love is fantastically portrayed and is sure to leave you spellbound.
So is the film perfect? No, it has its share of flaws and the script has scope for improvement. The relationship between Alex and Deena is half baked, so are some of the antics of the lead actors. However, there are a lot of things things that overshadow these flaws.
Mosayile Kuthirameenukal is a genuinely good attempt and is worth a watch. It takes us through paths that are uncommon in Malayalam films and is a visual treat. It's a breath of fresh air, especially after being subjected to high profile tortures in the form of Gangster, Ringmaster, Polytechnic, 1 by two and Law Point.
I give it 3/5.
