I know this is an old movie ... But the movie deserves a separate thread. When I searched the Forum, I couldn't find any reviews for Papilio Budha. So I am posting it as a separate thread ....
Papilio Budha
Kariyan is the leader of tribals. Under Kariyan the tribals protest the govt oppression of the tribals/dalits. However, his son Shankaran (S.P. Sreekumar) does not believe in his father's cause. Sankaran wants to go to America with Jack and study there. Jack is an American who came to India in tourist visa to study about butterflies. With the help of Shankaran, Jack was able to catch a rare butterfly called Papilio Budha. Butterflies are considered as feminine and Jack (incidentally a gay) being a butterfly catcher, shows the contrast in his psyche.
The govt. wants the tribals to leave Meppara. However, the tribals do not want to leave their land and they decide to commence peaceful protests under the leadership of Kariyan.
Manjusree (Saritha) is an auto riksha diver and a part time teacher. Though Manju constantly has to suffer sleazy remarks and sexual innuendos from other male riksha divers she does not leave the job as she needs the revenue to educate the tribal children in the village. One day Dasappan, a male auto driver, tries to molest her and Manju reacts violently using a spanner. This incident angers all the auto drivers in the stand.
Manju complaints about this incident to Shankaran, who with a dirty smile asks her: "Ninte mula kandaal aarkkanedi poruthy kittane ?"
She angrily tore open her shirt and retorts: "Ithu niraye ente vedhanakal kallichu kidakkuvaanu. Ithokke ninakku kudichu theerkkanokkuvo .. ?! Kudikkeda ... Kudikkeda, patti !!"
Shankaran is also helping a bunch of students/activists who wants to study the tribals and their problems. One day during the party he realises that these activists do not have any empathy or sympathy towards Dalits. They have drowned so deep in their racial superiority that they fails to see Shankaran even in the brightest of lights. They will always see Shankaran as pulayan. It does not matter whether he goes to America and study there. And this makes Shankaran to rethink his beliefs.
Next day while he was helping Jack to catch butterflies the police catches him. They question him about his Maoist connect under torture. When the police realises that the questioning is not fruitful they releases him. Shankaran mourns the fact that his world is rapidly shrinking.
One day in the evening while Manju was returning from her job a passenger pleads her to take him for a ride. As she hears urgency in his voice she reluctantly agrees to take him. During the ride she realises that a bunch of auto rickshaws are following them. The auto rickshaws corners her in a secluded place and drivers rapes her. The auto rickshaws symbolically have photos of Gandhi, Che Guvera, etc. the foremost leaders of Ahimsa and Revolution.
This incident angers the tribals. They commence protests and it ultimately leads to police cruelty. As the situation began to worsen the Chief Minister approaches Gandhiyan Ramdas to appease the tribals in Meppara. The Govt. wants the tribals to vacate Meppara as the court has ordered to vacate the tribals within a week. The Gandiyan agrees to it. When the tribals hears about it they decides that they won't allow Ramdas to begin his hunger strike. Consequently the tribals decides that they don't want to be Hindus anymore. They sheds their Hindutva and becomes Buddhists.
District collector (Padmapriya) orders tribals to stop their provocative slogans and let Ramdas enter the tribal area. But the tribals ignores this warning and as a result, police, using force, oppresses the protest and arrests them. It is interesting to watch how Himsa is used to enforce Ahimsa.
The movie ends with the tribals leaving their "unlawfully" grabbed land.
Salute to the Director (Jayan K Cherian) for making such a daring movie. The movie is unapologetic and realistic. It portrays the struggles of tribals in a disturbing clarity. As the movie taking place in a forest area the frames are visually stunning and the sound mixing is simply amazing!! The only negative for me is that the movie shows Butterflies in a glass jar; which is actually a deal breaker for me. I know that not all butterflies are cute little honey suckers and most of them prefers blood and meat. Still I love butterflies. They are really beautiful!
The movie deals with too many issues like racism, rape, discrimination, oppression, land mafia, eco tourism etc to be described in this small review. So I implore all of you to watch the movie.
Rating: 5/5
Warning: The move contains rape scene, uncensored male nudity, offensive language and torture.
