Within few minutes into the movie, Mohanlal makes an entry wearing a silly wig followed by a song sequence. That itself set the tone for me. I knew what to expect. Mohanlal aka Bhai ji(he doesnt have a name in the movie) is a mastermind when it comes to robbery and inorder to establish the protagonist as a mastermind, the director, surprisingly uses only one heist sequence, that too an ordinary one without actually showing how its done!!. Bhai ji sets out on one final mission to steal a treasure worth millions from an ancient palace in Kerala. Can he pull it off is what Mr. Fraud is all about.
Okay, so the story is nothing great and not surprisingly the script is also half baked and doesnt offer much thrills and frills. The first half is pretty decent with some witty oneliners, aimed at the fans, and an action block that has been choregraphed well. The director as if to give a mass feel every now and then , has inserted plenty of slowmo walking scenes of Mohanlal where the camera moves in low angles to elevate the herosim. The whole computer graphics thing looks advanced and but doesnt look out of place and its good that the director didnt overworked it. The second half is a letdown as nothing much happens and even the final heist sequence doesnt excite. The climax is as expected with the mandatory twist. I tried guessing the twist from the beginning but frankly i got it wrong.
Its just an another day in the office for Mohanlal as he cakewalks through his role. The movie relies on Mohanlal's screen presence and he saves the movie to an extent. Other than the salt and pepper look, none of the makeovers looks convincing and were silly. Mohanlal's getup in the final scene provided some unintentional laughs. Villain Dev Gil doesnt make an impact and he seems to included just for the climax fight. Vijay Babu and Manjari Phadnis as Mohanlal's accomplice's has nothing much to do other than walk with him slowmotion. Siddique, Saikumar & Mia's characters have somewhat importance for their characters but all other's seems to be for namesake.
Cinematography by Sathees Kurup is neat and slick. Songs by Gopi Sundar are medicore while BGM is ok. Stunts by Silva is good especially the one in the first half. The running time of around 2.20hrs is acceptable but the flow is uneven. The director may have wanted it to be a thriller, but sadly the movie doesnt provide that nor induce curiosity in viewers as in Mohanlal-Unnikrishan's previous outing, Grandmaster. At the end of the day, Mr. Fraud offers nothing new and follows the beaten path. Consider it if you have some time to kill.
