Munnariyippu: Malayalam Cinema come off age...
Ernakulam Saritha . 3:00 P.M
Munnariyippu produced by Ranjith under the banner of
Gold coin motion pictures and directed by Venu is a movie
that will keep you glued to the edge of the seat until the last dialogue is delivered; until the last frame has disappeared from the silver screen. The makers of this movie have shown us that entertainment is possible in a different way, that is without resorting to cliches.
Anjali Arakkal an aspiring young journalist is introduced to a veteran jail superintendent Ramamoorthy by a well wisher to ghost write his 'auto'biography. During her visits to Ramamoorthy, she meets C.K.Raghavan leading her to a whole new world of Raghavanian philosophy. Her life will never be the same again.....
Malayalam cinema can boast of an array of brilliant cinematographers who turned out to be great film makers as well.
A.Vincent, Balumahendra, Shaji N.Karun to name a few, have
made a lasting impression wielding the microphone along with the camera. Venu is the latest entrant into this exalted group. Even though his first movie came a decade and a half ago it's through Munnariyippu that he has announced his presence as a brilliant director. Venu is simply amazing as a film maker with Munnariyippu. To keep the audience on tenterhooks with a movie devoid of any cheap commercial elements is no mean achievement.
R.Unni's screenplay and dialogues are a revelation. Infact the film has some of the best dialogues in a movie in recent years.
The impressive taglines and thought provoking banter mouthed by Raghavan showed the power of Unni.
Venu's camera is realistic and each frame is hand in glove with the mood of the film. Bijipal's background scores are so soothing and pleasant that you get a feeling that you are part of a journey to the unknown world. Editing has made the movie brisk and devoid of any lag.
The movie has a rich assembly of who's who of Malayalam cinema. Joy Mathew, Nedumudi, Ranji Panicker, Prithwiraj, Saiju, Sreeraman...all have done justice to their roles. Even Muthumani in a single scene is quite impressive. Aparna Gopinath deserves all the plaudits and appreciation. She has lived the role of a struggling journalist. She is like a fresh air to our cinema.
You can never see Mammootty in this movie. The university of acting has delivered another master class. His presentation of Raghavan is quite different from all his legendary characters. It's a wonderful example of minute, microscopic acting. His face resembles an artist's canvas where each and every detail is depicted. Dialogue delivery is out of the world. The legendary sound is back with a bang. Some of the eternal critics of Mammootty have bowed before him after watching Pranchiyettan. Is there any one left? If so, Raghavan is for them, the doubters, the critics, the haters. Raghavan will remain forever as a reference to all aspiring actors.
No movie is perfect. Munnariyippu too has it's flaws. There will be debate over it's climax. But remember, this is not an ordinary movie. The makers of the movie has all the rights in the world to create a movie of their tastes and sensibilities.
It has been a long 28 years since I watched a movie on it's first day of release. It was worth the wait. It was a chilling experience. This movie will haunt you for a long time to come.
Malayalam cinema has really come off age.
