Default Peruchazhi - The Definitive Entertainer

    Theatre - Galaxy Paradise
    Show - 29-8-14, 10 AM
    Status - 5-6 seats vacant

My expectations were quite high upon the announcement of the film. I was expecting a full blown nuanced satire. But after the promos it was quite clear that it would be more of an entertainer. It would be good time to pause and reflect whether you like Mohanlal. If you don't, please don't bother watching the film. Its a complete Lal show paying homage to the superstar and the comic genius. If you don't like the man, it would be a waste of your money. If you can tolerate him, you will have a good time. If you really like him, its gonna be a blast for most of the time.

Arun Vaidyanathan has shown that he is a good director. Frames are slick and pretty, pacing is pretty much good throughout, and its good to see quality production. His script on the other hand goes on a gradual downward curve a sharp dive and spike here and there. Script conveys the point that politicians are out to screw the public regardless of where they are from. The methods are same, only the people and environment change. Some instances look downright silly though. But the film does not take itself seriously. Its sort of an absurd setting and it would be criminal to put a negative on its realism. But the dialogues are really good for most parts. Makes you laugh out loud. Comedy is top notch except when it falls flat on a couple of slapstic scenes. Dialogue oriented comedy has been the heart of Malayalam films and this film harks back to old days of proper counters. The sketches whenever Jagannathan meets a girl is pretty well done. Pays homage to the classic romantic songs. An effective way of utilizing Mohanlal.

Mohanlal produces one of his best performances in recent times in a comedy flick. Comic timing is still intact. Shows that he needs the right kind of setting to thrive. His mannerism as Peruchazhi is consistent and pretty interesting. Baburaj is really good. I thought he would go overboard, but he has done a damn fine job. Aju is perfectly cast and makes a mark. Mukesh is very good. Some great dialogues and counters. Pisharody was awesome as an earth to Mukesh. He really needs more roles like this. He will certainly go places. Ragini Dwivedi's role was handled with as much care as the makers can. Its pretty difficult to cast her without cringe as the pair of a 50+ year old man and they succeed to a large extent. The actor who played Kory was awesome. Perfect for a mean and dumb Republican.

Songs could have been better. BGM is awesome. Camerawork is stellar and gives the right visuals with perfect lighting. Stunts could have better. With the kind of buildup, a Mohanlal film should have better stunts. Editing is nearly flawless except at a couple of instances.

Peruchazhi is an over the top film in an interesting setting. Lots of laughs to be had. A definitive entertainer, just not enough satire.
