    DAY 1

Shooter Jitu Rai gave India its first gold medal at the 17th Asian Games shortly after compatriot Shweta Chaudhry opened the medal count with a bronze

Dipika Pallikal and Joshna Chinappa assured a medal in women's singles squash when they reached the quarters where they will face each other, with both semi-finalists guaranteed a medal.

Adding to the squash joy was Saurav Ghosal who beat Jordan's Alsaraj Ahmad Khaleel Ahmad 11-2, 11-4, 11-3 to enter the men's singles quarter-finals.

In badminton, the women's team entered the semis by beating Thailand 3-2 in the last eight clash to assure India of its first medal from the discipline since 1986 Seoul.

India struck gold as Rai won the men's 50m pistol gold. Before he overcame a shaky start and moved to the top only in the second to last shot of the final, Shweta delivered a surprise bronze in women's 10m air pistol final where the more fancied Heena Sidhu, a one-time World No.1, and teenager Malaika Goel, who struck silver at Commonwealth Games, disappointed.

    DAY 2

Two bronze medals -- and the assurance of at least two more medals from squash -- summed up India's showing on the second day of the 17th Asian Games in Incheon.

Jitu Rai failed to add a second individual medal, but did help the men's 10m Pistol team to add a bronze to India's kitty.

The women's badminton team also had to settle for the bronze medal but it finally ended India's 28-year wait for a medal from the sport.

That brought India's tally to one gold and three bronze for two days.

On the squash courts, Dipika Pallikal, who had threatened to skip the Asian Games following a draw that pitted her against the more fancied teammate Joshana Chinnappa in the quarters, marked her 23rd birthday with a win that made her the first Indian woman squash player to secure a medal at Asian Games.
Saurav Ghosal who has figured on the podium last two Asian Games made it three-in-a-row but was looking forward to changing the colour of medal as he is the top seed.

Earlier in the day, Rai spearheaded India's 10-metre air pistol team to clinch the bronze medal but missed out on an individual medal, finishing fifth, at the Ongnyeon International Shooting Range here.

Trap shooting exponents Manavjit Singh Sandhu, Mansher Singh and Kynan Chenai turned in a disappointing show as none of them could qualify for the final round with the team finishing sixth at the Gyeonggido Shooting Range.

A day after winning the gold medal in the 50-metre pistol event, Rai continued his inspiring form to lead the men's team, also comprising Samresh Jung and Prakash Nanjappa, to give India its second bronze from the sport. Both India and China were tied on 1,743 points but China clinched the silver on account of an extra x.

    DAY 3

The women's 25 metre pistol team and squash player Dipika Pallikal gave India two bronze medals while Saurav Ghosal stayed in the hunt for the elusive squash gold at the 17th Asian Games here Monday.

A silver, which could become gold, was confirmed for Ghosal, who could improve his and IndiaÂ’s best-ever silver to gold by winning his title match against a far lower-ranked opponent from Kuwait, Ahmad Khaleel Ahmad, in the final Tuesday.

The shooters, who raised expectations with a superb haul at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, faced far superior opposition here and were left behind in the race as only the womenÂ’s 25m pistol team comprising Rahi Sarnobat, Anisa Sayyed and Heena Sidhu managed a bronze.

The star of the day was Ghosal, who outclassed two-time Asian Games gold medallist Ong Beng Hee of Malaysia 11-9, 11-4, 11-4 to book a place in the final. Ghosal, a bronze medallist in 2006 and 2010, is looking to become the first Indian squash player to win a gold after already having become the first to make the final.

Wushu athletes Narender Grewal and Yumnam Sanathoi Devi assured India of two more medals after winning their respective men's and women's quarter-finals.

In the men's Sanda -60 kg quarters, World No.9 Grewal defeated Abdullah of Pakistan 2-0 to enter the medal round. He will face Philippines' World No.3 Jean Claude Saclag in the semi-final Tuesday.

In women's quarter-final, Sanathoi downed Mongolia's Amgalanjargal Sangidorj 2-0 to confirm at least a bronze in the Sanda -52 kg category. World No.5 Sanathoi will take on China's Luan Zhang in the semi-final Tuesday.

    DAY 4

Squash player Saurav Ghosal won a historic silver as India notched up five medals but the gold remained elusive for the third consecutive day in the 17th Asian Games here Tuesday.

It was also an emotional day for Indian sports as Olympic champion Abhinav Bindra ended his shooting career with his first Asian Games individual medal, a bronze, and also inspired the 10 metre air rifle team to another bronze.

India ended the day with two bronze medals in wushu after Sanathoi Devi and Narender Grewal lost their respective semi-final bouts in the sanda category at the Ganghwa Dolmens Gymnasium.

However for Ghosal, it was a case of so near yet so far for as the top seed had to be content with the squash silver - India's first silver in the discipline - at the Asian Games.

The World No.16 Indian, who was the favourite to win a maiden gold for the country in the racquet sport at the Asiad, was shocked 2-3 by World No.46 Abdullah Al Muzayen of Kuwait in the men's singles final at the Yeorumul Squash Courts.

In shooting, the 2008 Olympic champion Bindra, who Monday tweeted that Tuesday will be his last day as a professional, recorded a final score of 187.1 to take the third position as China finished one-two with Haoran Yang (209.6) clinching the gold medal and Yifel Cao (208.9) taking the silver.

He had also led India to the bronze medal in the 10 metre air rifle men's team event. Bindra's individual bronze medal was India's eighth medal in the Incheon Games and sixth from the shooting range. Bindra's bronze also marks the end of an illustrious career with an elusive Asiad individual medal.

But there was disappointment for India in the men's 25m rapid fire pistol event and women's trap. Harpreet Singh finished seventh as Gurpreet Singh and Pemba Tamang failed to impress in the men's 25 metre rapid fire pistol qualification stage 1. Harpreet scored 290-8x with scores of 98, 99 and 93 in three shots, respectively.

In women's trap, the team of Shreyasi Singh, Seema Tomar and Shagun Chowdhary finished eighth. India had a combined total of 188 and finished far behind Kazkahstan, who took gold with a score of 203. China took silver (199) while North Korea (19 settled for bronze.

    DAY 5

The strong shooting squad, which had accounted for the bulk of medal collection so far, drew a blank today which led to India dropping one place in the medal table. With the addition of just one bronze today, India took their tally to 12 (1 gold, 1 silver, 10 bronze).
    .
Early in the day, Dushyant, hailing from Haryana and belonging to the Bengal Engineering Group in Roorkie, led from the 500m till the last 200m in the 2000m race before strong northerly winds and rain put paid to his gold medal hopes as he fell behind two others and finished third by clocking 7:26.57.

In badminton, sixth seed Saina easily overcame U Teng Lok of Macau 21-10, 21-8 in just 20 minutes and lined up against her next opponent Iran's Soraya Aghaeihajiagha, who dispatched Mongolia's Khulangoo Baatar in straight games in another round of 32 women's singles encounter.
Sindhu, seeded 8th, too had a comfortable 21-7, 21-13 first round victory in 19 minutes over Wong Kit Leng, also of Macau, to book a round of 16 clash against M Bellaetrix of Indonesia, a contest the lanky Hyderabadi described as "tricky".

In the boxing ring, comeback-man Akhil pummelled his Nepalese rival Purna Bahadur Lama before notching up a Technical Knockout triumph while Shiva merely had to show up to enter the second round as Indian boxers began their Asian Games campaign on a winning note.

In squash, India took a big step towards winning another squash medal at the Incheon Asian Games after the women's team, including Joshana Chinappa and Dipika Pallikal, upset Hong Kong 2-1 before beating Pakistan 3-0 in Pool B today.

Deepika Kumari, India's best bet in women's archery also showed good form to come up as the eighth best in the ranking round of the women's individual recurve event at the Gyeyang Asiad Archery Field here. She will now will take on Uzbekistan's Munira Nurmanova in the pre-quarter final elimination round on September 26.
