Iyobinte Pusthakam-A mass masala film set in 1940s

When you consider the period films released in Malayalam , most of them are re-telling of an occurred event or our history. And this is where Iyobinte Pusthakam stands out. This film is a total fiction set in Munnar in 1940s and has all the ingredients to consider as modern day's mass masala( including an item song featuring Amala Paul) but all in unconventional way .

Basically film is about the tale of the peasants who with the help of a noble and brave ex Navy (Fahadh Faasil as Aloshi is brilliant yet again) and some revolutionaries ( Sreejith Ravi and Co) fight for the land against the feudal lord and his sons (Lal ,Jinu Joseph and Chemban Jose). The cast also includes a cunning yet brutal businessman played by Jayasurya(wonderful casting here), a beautiful and helpless heroine (Isha Sharvani) ,a femme fatale (Padmapriya), a very skillful peasant (Vinayakan) and lot more interesting characters like the Nazi-loving and communist-hating Tamil Iyer cop(John Vijay) but I don't know their names.

The stunt sequences( by D Danny in the film) are really good. There is one scene in which Fahadh disassemble a rifle-sheer mass. The music by Neha S Nair & Yakzan Gary Pereira (fusion genre I think, but predominately western ) could have been better- but the violin piece for scenes featuring Jayasurya towards the end was very pleasant. Production designing, costumes,make up and cinematography were all top notch.

My only problem was with the pacing of the film. The story takes time build up. Maybe the writer and director wanted it to be like that with lots of action in the second but the editor should have done better.Also there are a couple of unwanted songs(including that item number) and scenes. With better editing some 15 minutes could have trimmed down-which might increase the pace considerably and reduce the running time as well.

But still I really liked this period action film. Amal Neerad's last 2 films (this and Kullante Bharya) were wonderful stuffs. This film proves all he needs a quality script( Gopan Chidambaram & Syam Pushkaran) and lets hope he keeps this way. Credit also goes to Fahadh for producing such a film.

There are lots of cars infront of Varsham theatre and full motorbikes in this theatre. I think family audience will prefer Varsham than this . But this definitely will be a hit.
