Varsham - My Review

It's been a long time since I wrote a detailed review for a film and I thought Varsham deserves to have one even though all of us know about the movie's details and verdict by now.

To start off with a big thanks to Ranjith Shankar for waiting so long to make Mammukka to act in this movie and as you said, none could have played this role to this perfection other than him. Like all your previous movies, the movie had a message and a feel good approach but here it was more emotional and heart touching. A press meet/ media related scene seems to be something sentimental and unavoidable :)

There is nothing great to rave about the story and it has cliches filled with melodrama but dialogues and direction takes this movie to a higher level apart from an emotional tearjerker. It's a journey of central character Venu who goes through varied emotions like jealousy, greedy, caring, slightly psychic, lost and coming back with an aim.

What makes the movie to sit us and watch without any distraction is undoubtedly because of one man - Mammukka. Superb treat to see him in such roles where he is the KING. Yes, the variation he bought with a controlled performance and subtle acting in recent films was something different but when he is more expressive, it's an absolute pleasure and joy. The hospital scene and follow up outburst at home were the best moments in the movie and there were many such scenes in second half where it is hard to pick the best.

Supporting cast were overshadowed by the towering presence of Mammukka but still Asha Sharath managed well to give a competent performance even though it was more like a serial type acting at the beginning. Sajitha, who was spectacular in Shutter, was totally over (may be because of her character) while Harish Pisharedy, Sudheer Karamana, TG Ravi were excellent in their respective roles. Welcome back Mamata Mohandas in a brief but important role.

Manoj Pillai's cinematogrpaghy, Bijipal's songs and background score were decent and matched the mood of the movie. This might not be as entertaining/thrilling/feel good as Ranjith Shankar's previous works, but it is a very genuine effort and will touch your heart for sure. With Mammukka in stunning form, it's a must watch for the fans and family audiences. Those who are looking out for pure entertainment alone filled with usual masala, please stay away as it will reduce any negative opinion to spread.

Verdict: Good (3.5/5)
