Kiss of Love protests inspire film
With Kiss of Love (KoL) protest evolving as a mass movement against moral policing, it has inspired a team of filmmakers to make a feature film on the subject. Though the creative provocation was KoL, it is not straight documentation of the movement but rather the politics-related to it. It focusses on movements that stand for civil rights and freedom of expression, said US-based Indian filmmaker Jayan K Cherian, who made films like 'Papilio Buddha' and 'Shape of the Shapeless'.
Cherian's Inner Silence Films is producing the picture in collaboration with certain individuals who wish to remain anonymous. He added that it is a cloud-funded film. "It is ridiculous to equate it with sexual liberation and there is politics and activism beyond the ideologies that we are used to," said Cherian, who strongly believes that it is a civil rights movement.
"We should look at KoL from this context because it has a global dimension and is a voice against authoritarianism that should be seen along with the Jasmine revolution (popular uprising in Tunisia that protested against corruption, poverty, and political repression) and Pussy Riot performances (Russian feminist punk band). KoL is facing stiff opposition since it is against the kind of culture propagated by people like Narendra Modi," he said.
The human body has its own politics, and this film, which is yet to be named, is based on that politics, said the director. "The body itself is a nation and every individual has the right to do whatever he or she likes. This film will be an experiment of sorts," he said.
"Though Deedi Damodaran is coordinating the script, we don't prefer a conventional approach and there won't be a full-fledged written script. Rather it would superimpose narrative on real incidents. The writing process is in its final stage and shooting will start in January," he said.
"There are many evils that have affected modern society, including Islamophobia, and this film will be a 'public voice' against such evils," said Damodaran, who is a KoL supporter. The crew had filmed KoL protests in Ernakulam and Kozhikode for reference.
