Special screening of 'Dangal' for all-daughter families in Haryana's Karnal district




Chandigarh, Jan 4 (IANS) To encourage girls to take the lead in sports and other fields and create a positive mindset in favour of daughters, the district administration in Haryana's Karnal on Wednesday organised a special screening of the film "Dangal" for families in the villages who have four or more daughters.


Karnal Additional Deputy Commissioner Priyanka Soni said on Wednesday that 924 such families, having four or more daughters, were identified for the special screening of the film.


The film was screened in a mall multiplex in Karnal town, 120 km from Chandigarh.





"The film, which chronicles the rise of sisters Geeta and Babita Phogat as medal-winning international wrestlers, and the efforts made by their father, Mahavir Singh Phogat, would serve as a source of inspiration for these families," Soni said.


"The girls, some of whom were watching a film in a mall for the first time, were visibly excited and expressed their happiness over watching the film. They said that after watching 'Dangal', they were now feeling motivated to work hard and pursue sports along with their studies," she added.


The sex ration (number of females per 1,000 males) in Haryana has been the worst amomg all states at 879. With efforts of the authorities, the sex ratio improved to 904 last year.

Aamir Khan's Christmas release 'Dangal,' which also stars Fatima Sana Sheikh, Sanya Malhotra, Sakshi Tanwar, Zaira Wasim and Suhani Bhatnagar, went on with its glorious run at the box-office on Day 13.

The sports drama, co-written and directed by Nitesh Tiwari, has now entered the coveted Rs 300-crore club and has become the first ever Bollywood film to achieve the feat in 13 days. 'Dangal' is now the fourth entrant to the club after 'PK,' 'Bajrangi Bhaijaan' and 'Sultan.'

While the final figure of Wednesday collection is not out yet, film critic and trade analyst Taran Adarsh confirmed that 'Dangal' has crossed the Rs 300-crore mark.

With this, 'Dangal' has also become the highest grossing film of 2016 surpassing the lifetime collection of 'Sultan' which made Rs 300.45 crore at the domestic box-office. 'Dangal' is enjoying a tax-free status in Delhi, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, which is immensely benefitting its business at the ticket windows.

Dangal Overseas Box Office Collection Update: Beats Sultan


After beating in India, Aamir Khan’s Dangal has crossed Sultan in the overseas markets too. It has taken just 13 days to do so.


Dangal overseas box office collection stands at $23.31 million (158.70 crore). On the other hand Sultan collected $23.09 million. Though Christmas period is overseas friendly as even an average film Dilwale went on to collect 26 million plus just riding on the star power of Shahrukh Khan. But Dangal was not a commercial film and has very few things going in it’s favour except Aamir Khan. The genre was also not overseas friendly.


Dangal worldwide box office collection has crossed 550 crore mark. It will be the fastest film to cross 600 crore and also will be 2nd highest worldwide grosser of all time only behind PK. But there will be a chance to go over PK if it is released in more countries in the second phase.
