YEAR END BOX OFFICE COLLECTIONS – 2014

2014 was not a great year for Malayalam film industry as a whole and especially for top actors. Out of 150 odd movies released, only a handful were able to make the producers happy. Being said that the show stoppers of 2014 were young stars especially Nivin Pauly.

Top collected Movies of 2014

The biggest hit of 2014 is Bangalore Days, directed and scripted by Anjali Menon. Bangalore Days collected a whopping 26 crores in the box office. Next in line is Biju Menon’s surprise hit Vellimoonga. This comedy entertainer collected 17.78 crores gross. This year also Dileep is in top 5 with his entertainer Ringmaster. This was directed by Raffi and collected 14.58 crores gross. Manju Warrier’s come back movie How Old Are You is also in top 5. How Old Are You collected 12.84 crores gross. Dulquer-Unni Mukundan team’s Vikramadityan and Prithviraj-Asif Ali team’s Saptamasree Thaskarah collected around 12 crores. These are figures only from A class theaters and adding collections from B/C centers will make a slight increase in these numbers.

Biggest Flops of 2014 (In terms of loss)

There are more flops than hits in 2014. Here we try to analyse them and figure out the biggest flops in terms of loss to producers. Prithviraj’s London Bridge was shot entirely abroad and at a high budget. This was a clear non performer at the box office and collected only 2.20 crores gross. Jayaram’s Salaam Kashmir is also a non-performer in the box office and suffered huge loss to Varnachitra. Mammootty’s Gangster was one of the most talked movies in 2014. But this could collect only 2.87 crores gross. Dileep’s Villali Veeran is a big budget film but the share was around 2.20 crores only. The last in the list is Prithviraj’s Tamaar Padaar. This had a gross of 2.40 crores.

Surprise Hits

There are two surprise hits in 2014. The first one is Biju Menon’s Vellimoonga. This comes second in terms of top hits of 2014. Vellimoonga was directed by debutant Jibu Jacob.The second surprise hit of 2014 is Ithihasa, directed by debutant Binu S. Ithihasa collected a share of 1.75 crores while the total budget of the movie was around 1.5 crores only.

2014 will be a year Mohanlal doesn’t like to remember. The first one to release was Mr. Fraud on May 17th 2014. Directed by B Unnikrishnan, this heist movie got good opening in box office. The final share of Mr. Fraud is 3.17 crores, which comes to around 8 crores gross. Considering the high budget of Mr Fraud, it was a loss for the makers. Next release from Mohanlal was Srinath Rajendran’s Koothara. This was a clear non performer at the box office and the gross collection was 2.75 crores. The last release was Peruchazhi, directed by Arun Vaidyanathan. This big budget film was released during Onam and the total share was 4.12 crores. Though the film had negative opinion, the huge initial helped the producers to reach breakeven mark.

Mammootty had a decent year in terms of performance. His first release Balyakala Sakhi, directed by Pramod Payyannur, was released on February 7th. The film couldn’t get approval from mass or class audience and bombed in the box office. Next to follow was Praise The Lord and the gross collection was just around 3 crores for this. Much hyped Gangster released next and the performance was ever worse. Gangster collected a gross of 2.87 crores. After this Manglish released and this too couldn’t perform at the box office. Gross collection of Manglish is 5.20 crores. Then on August 22nd Venu’s Munnariyipp was released and this was critically accepted by couldn’t reflect that in collections. Munnariyipp collected around 2.74 crores gross and considering the genre of this film, can’t say this is too bad. Rajadhiraja was Mammootty’s Onam release and this is his highest grosses in 2014. Rajadhiraja collected a distributor share of 4.09 crores and considering the high budget it is a breakeven for the investors. The final release from Mammootty was Varsham. This was made at a small budget of 2.75 crores (Mammootty himself was the producer so didn’t consider his remuneration) and collected a gross of 5.80 crores. This is the only hit from Mammootty in 2014.

Compared to previous years, 2014 was not so great for Dileep. As usual Dileep won the Vishu battle and Ringmaster collected a gross of 14.25 crores. Avatharam, directed by Josheiy, was released on August 1st and could manage to get 6 crore gross. Made at a smaller budget this was breakeven for 4B, the producers. Next to follow was Dileep’s Onam release Villaliveeran. This film was received with unanimous negative opinion but still Dileep’s hold among family audience helped it to get 5.27 crores gross. Since Villaliveeran is a high budget movie, surely this was loss for Super Good films.

Prithviraj had four releases in 2014. The first one was big budget London Bridge, released on February 1st. This was a washout at the box office, eventhough the reviews were mixed. London Bridget collected 2.20 crores gross at the box office. Next to follow was Vishu release 7th Day. This dark shade thriller, directed by new comer Shyamdhar, was a hit and collected 9.75 crores gross. The third release was Prithviraj and Asif Ali’s Onam release Sapthamasree Thaskarah. This was the Onam winner and collected a gross of 11.85 crores. The last release was Tamaar Padaar and this was a disaster with a gross collection of 2.40 crores. Tamaar padaar was directed by debutant Dileesh Nair. Prithviraj’s Tamil movie Kavya Thalaivan also released in 2014 and it couldn’t do any wonders in Kerala box office.

Star of the year is undoubtly Nivin Pauly. Nivin had four releases in 2014, including the extended cameo in Vikramadityan. The first one was 1983 and this is a clear hit considering the low budget. The next release was mega hit Om Shanthi Osana and then came the blockbuster Bangalore Days. Bangalore Days collected a whopping 26 crores in the box office.

2014 ല്* റിലീസ് ചെയ്ത സിനിമയില്* ഏറ്റവും കൂടുതല്* ചിത്രങ്ങളില്* അഭിനയിച്ച നായകനടന്* മമ്മൂട്ടിയാണ്. ബാല്യകാല സഖി, ഗ്യാങ്*സ്റ്റര്*, പ്രെയിദ് ദ ലോര്*ഡ്, മംഗ്ലീഷ്, മുന്നറിയിപ്പ്, രാജാധിരാജ, വര്*ഷം.. വിജയവും പരാജയവും രേഖപ്പെടുത്തിയ ഏഴ് സിനിമകള്*. ഇതില്* മമ്മൂട്ടിയിലെ നടനെ വ്യക്തമാക്കി തരുന്നത് മുന്നറിയിപ്പും വര്*ഷവുമാണ്. ദേശാന്തരങ്ങള്* കീഴടക്കിയ വൈക്കം മുഹമ്മദ് ബഷീറിന്റെ ബാല്യകാല സഖിയെ സിനിമയെടുത്തു അവഹേളിച്ചെന്നു പറയുന്നില്ല, എവിടെയോ കൊണ്ടുപോയി കെട്ടാന്* ശ്രമിച്ച സംവിധായകനെ തിരിച്ചറിയാന്* മമ്മൂട്ടിക്ക് കഴിയാതെ പോയത് ഒരു വാസ്തവം തന്നെയാണ്. അതുപോലെ സക്കറിയയുടെ പ്രെയിസ് ദ ലോര്*ഡ്. ഇവിടെയും മമ്മൂട്ടിക്ക് തോല്*വി സംഭവിച്ചു. ഗ്യാങ്സ്റ്ററും മംഗ്ലീഷും ഗുണകരമായതുമില്ല. കഥയില്ലായ്മയുടെ അവശതയുണ്ടെങ്കിലും നവാഗതനായ അജയ് വാസുദേവ് സംവിധാനം ചെയ്ത രാജാധിരാജ കൊമേഴ്*സ്യല്* വിജയം നേടിയ സിനിമയാണ്.
ഈ വര്*ഷം മമ്മൂട്ടിക്ക് ലഭിച്ച, മമ്മൂട്ടി എന്ന നടനിലേക്കെത്തിയ ഗൗരവപ്രാധാന്യമുള്ള രണ്ടേരണ്ടു സിനിമയേയുള്ളൂ രണ്ട് കഥാപാത്രങ്ങളേയുള്ളൂ. ക്യാമറമാന്* വേണു സംവിധാനം ചെയ്ത മുന്നറിയിപ്പും രഞ്ജിത്ത് ശങ്കര്* സംവിധാനം ചെയ്ത വര്*ഷവും. 2014 ല്* സൂപ്പര്*ഹിറ്റ് വിജയം നേടിയ ചിത്രങ്ങളിലൊന്നാണ് വര്*ഷം. 2013 ല്* ആറ് സിനിമയില്* അഭിനയിച്ച മമ്മൂട്ടിക്ക് 2014 ല്* ഏഴ് ചിത്രങ്ങളുണ്ടെങ്കിലും വിജയം രണ്ടിടത്ത് മാത്രമായി ഒതുങ്ങി. എണ്ണത്തിന്റെ വലുപ്പത്തെക്കാളും മമ്മൂട്ടി പ്രാധാന്യം നല്*കേണ്ടത് മികവിന്റെ തിളക്കത്തിനാകണമെന്നാണ് പറയാനുള്ളത്.

മോഹന്*ലാല്*-

മോഹന്*ലാല്* ഇക്കുറി മൂന്ന് സിനിമയിലാണ് അഭിനയിച്ചത്. 2013 ല്* അഞ്ച് ചിത്രങ്ങളുണ്ടായിരുന്നു. പ്രേക്ഷകരെ പിടിച്ചുലച്ച ദൃശ്യത്തിന്റെ പച്ചപ്പില്* നിന്ന് 2014 ല്* പരാജയത്തിന്റെ ആഴങ്ങളിലേക്കാണ് മോഹന്*ലാല്* വീണത്.
മിസ്റ്റര്* ഫ്രോഡ്, കൂതറ, പെരുച്ചാഴി... പറയാന്* നല്ലൊരു പേരുപോലുമില്ലാത്ത സിനിമയില്* എങ്ങനെ അഭിനയിക്കാന്* സാധിക്കുന്നുവെന്നു മോഹന്*ലാലിനെ സ്*നേഹിക്കുകയും ബഹുമാനിക്കുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നവരുടെ ചോദ്യങ്ങള്*ക്ക് എന്ത് ഉത്തരമാണ് നല്*കുക. സിനിമയ്ക്ക് പേരിടുന്നത് സംവിധായകന്റെ ഉത്തരവാദിത്വത്തില്*പ്പെട്ട കാര്യമാണെന്നു പറഞ്ഞു മോഹന്*ലാലിന് ഒഴിയാം. പക്ഷേ പ്രേക്ഷകര്* അത് വിശ്വസിക്കണമെന്നില്ല. അവര്*ക്കറിയാവുന്നത് മോഹന്*ലാല്* എന്ന നടനവിസ്മയത്തെയാണ്.
അപ്പോള്* കഥയിലും കഥാപാത്രത്തിലും സിനിമയുടെ പേരിലുമൊക്കെ മോഹന്*ലാലിന്റെ കയ്യൊപ്പുണ്ടാവുകതന്നെ വേണം. രാജ്യം പത്മശ്രീ നല്*കി ആദരിച്ച ദേശീയ അംഗീകാരം നേടിയ മോഹന്*ലാല്* അഭിനയിക്കുന്ന സിനിമയ്ക്ക് എന്തുകാരണം കൊണ്ടായാലും ഇത്രയും വിലകുറഞ്ഞ പേരിടാമോയെന്നു സംവിധായകനും ശ്രദ്ധിക്കേണ്ടതുണ്ട്. മിസ്റ്റര്* ഫ്രോഡ്, കൂതറ, പെരുച്ചാഴി ഈ പേരുകളില്* തന്നെയുണ്ട് സിനിമയുടെ പൊതുവായ രൂപം. മോഹന്*ലാലിനെ സംബന്ധിച്ചിടത്തോളം സിനിമയുടെ കാര്യത്തില്* ചെറിയ വിജയംപോലും അവകാശപ്പെടാന്* കഴിയാതെ പോയ വര്*ഷമാണ് 2014.

2014 Malayalam Cinema- How the stars of Malayalam cinema fared.

As another year draws to a close the analyses have started to come out in every field. And film industry is one of the fields where an year end analysis holds good most. How films fared and how many actors made an impression etc. As far as Malayalam cinema is concerned the year that is slowly ebbing away is another watershed year. The much touted wave of change has started to make its presence felt. But the big trees remain unaffected beyond a point. And success and failure showed no partiality to any particular star. Films have soared to the heights of success, broke even and sank without a trace irrespective of the actors who featured in. Gone are the days when star power guaranteed a full week run in the theatres. It is almost a case of hit or miss now a days.

Metromatinee.com tries to give a honest picture of how our prominent stars fared in 2014. The facts and figures may not be beyond reproach, but at least it tries to give a bird's eye view of what transpired as far as Malayalam cinema's iconic stars and upcoming stars are concerned.

Mammootty-
They say star power is on wane,but what about Mammootty? Yes,his films have flopped and there has been an extended dry run, but still the legend remains unruffled. 2014 was not a terrific year for him by any means, but he did get backon rails after a disappointing 2013. 7 seven films of his released and among this 'Varsham', 'Rajadhi Raja' managed profits, while 'Manglish' and 'Munnariyippu' broke even. 'Gangster', 'Praise the Lord' and 'Balyakalasakhi' were absolute washouts. More than the hits or pits count, fans of Mammootty will be glad that the actor in him is back especially in movies like 'Munnariyippu' and 'Varsham' to an extent.

Mohanlal-
Malayalam cinema's biggest crowd puller in the last two decades or so had another indifferent year. After the historic success of 'Drishyam', which released at the fag end of last year, he failed to land a hit. Though his Tamil movie 'Jilla' with Vijay was a winner, in Malayalam he had three forgettable outings. His first film 'Mr.Fraud' was a disappointing effort while 'Peruchazhi' which arrived with much fanfare proved a real dud. And the cameo appearance in 'Koothara' further worsened his year. Indifferent health and journeys have meant that he was not as prolific as usual.

Dileep-
After reigning supreme with his ability to turn even crass movies into box office hits,popular actor Dileep was brought down to earth this year. He had an average year by his standards. 'Ringmaster' was is only hit, while other two releases 'Villali Veeran' and 'Avatharam' bit the dust.

Prithviraj-
The young superstar who many consider as heir to the throne of the big M s, Prithviraj had another good year. 'Sapthamasree Thaskaraha' and '7 th Day' were money spinners, while Tamil movie 'Kaaviyathalaivan' brought the actor in him to the fore. But in 'London Bridge' and 'Tamaar Padaar' he had two eminently forgettable ventures. The guest role in 'Munnariyippu' was notable as well.

Fahad Fazil-
The highly rated young actor Fahad had a reasonable year. Among his five films the multi starrer 'Bangalore Days' and his co-production venture 'Iyyobinte Pusthakam' were success stories while 'God's own Country', 'Money Rathnam' and 'One by Two' were not upto the mark.

Nivin Pauly-
The rising star of Malayalam film industry Nivin Pauly had a spectacular year with hits '1983','Om Shanthi Oshana','Bangalore Days' and the guest role in 'Vikramadithyan'. He almost had a perfect year.

Dulquer Salmaan-
Two multistar successes and three flops marked the year of the talented young actor Dulquer. 'Bangalore Days' was a mighty hit while 'Vikramadithyan' too made money. 'Salala Mobiles', 'Njaan' and 'Samsaram Arogyathinu Hanikaram' fared poorly.

Jayasurya-
This one was a poor year for the most hardworking young actor in Malayalam cinema. Box office success eluded him except for 'Iyyobinte Pusthakam' and to a degree 'Apothecary'. Other films including the latest release 'Aamayum Muyalum' didnt thrive.

Kunchacko Boban-
'How Old are you' gave him a hit, while 'Bhaiyya Bhaiyya','Polytechnic' etc. bombed. His latest release 'Cousins' is not doing well either.

Among other actors Biju Menon had a surprise hit in 'Vellimoonga'. Indrajith had a forgettable year with four flops. Asif Ali ensured that he made his mark with a couple of guest appearances which were hits. As a solo hero he has nothing to show. Unni Mukundan saved his face with the supporting actor role in 'Vikramadithyan'. Two veterans Suresh Gopi and Jayaram had a very poor year and both of them are struggling to make them relevant in Malayalam film industry.

Things will change further in the coming year for sure. All the actors mentioned above have a handful of projects lined up for them. And it will be interesting to see how the transition phase pans out in 2015.
