"Half-Baked Screenplay Meets Lazy Direction"
To start with,the expectation on Mariyam Mukku was really low before entering the hall as the movie fetched negative response from a major section of the audience on the day of itsrelease.Still,I decided to catch the directorial debut of once master scenarist James Albert with hopes to watch a passable movie which too Mariyam Mukku failed to offer,because of a disastrous second half.
With Mariyam Mukku,James Albert offers yet another lazily scripted movie,an addition into the league of Ezhu Sundra Rathrikal,Jawaan Of Vellimala and Venicile Vyaapari,with mediocre performances,poorly written characters,uninteresting narration & confusing sequences unfolding in and around a fictional coastal village in Kerala.As a director James looked struggling to get grip handling a silly and lifeless screenplay written by himself,which can stand nowhere near his creations in the past like classmates and Ividam Swargamanu.I felt James was too lazy that he didn't care making any emotional connect between the viewers & the movie from the onset of the second half.
The first 50-55 minutes of the movie went ok with two interesting song sequences,a promising romantic track in progress,Fahadh's fluidic acting and good chemistry between Fahadh and Sana.But soon after a point,Mariyam Mukku made me fall into sleep with no other option witnessing nothing interesting on screen. By the time the easily predictable climax is reached,the viewers would have landed in no mans land,exhausted,witnessing all those shabby sequences with no excitement whatsoever.Had the romantic track been given more importance,the movie could have been a much better experience,which sadly didn't happen.
Coming to the performances,Sana Althaf as the lead actress was a good choice & she did perform well on screen.Fahadh Fazil gave yet another good performance.A large number of underdeveloped characters make the supporting cast with a major share of the performances being poor or strictly average.
Music by Vidyasaagar was good & suiting the storyline.The soothing melody "Ee Kadalinu Kolu" in particular was choreographed really well on the backdrop of rain.
Overall,Mariyam Mukk is a lack-lustre debut by James Albert without a single feature to boast off.
Performances::

*BGM.
*Second Half.
*Lengthy Climax.
*Half-Baked Screenplay & Lazy Direction.
Verdict::Mariyam Mukku failed to engage till the end with a totally unimpressive second half that can easily make anyone yawn.I would have given the 'Passable' tag had the romantic element been exploited more and not the second half been such a boring experience.As it is ,Give it a miss and you will not be dsiappinted!
