I can certainly vouch for the fact that myself along with thousands of malayalees in Kuwait have been waiting anxiously for the release of Premam after the thunderous initial it gathered in India and the unanimous positive reports that the movie is carrying. The feeling that I got after watchin the movie was intense joy watching Alphonse Putharen unleashing his magic on screen.
The movie as its name suggests tells the tale of the love. It passes through three stages of Nivin Pauly's life who plays George David from his teenage to adulthood and the ladies he meets and falls in love in these stages. The chemistry between each pair is sparkling and refreshing. The most touching one obviously was George-Malar Episode which will go down as one of the most true romantic tracks in Malayalam Cinema ever. The other love tracks were also extremely sweet. Apart from the romance, it is filled in abundance with comedy. I cannot recall any movie in the recent past where I have laughed so much. The best part about the comedy was that it was not forced but in sync with the movie.
Performances:
Nivin Pauly has catapulted himself from Star to Superstar with this movie. Nivin portrays his career defining role as George David with utmost conviction and ease. The growth in Nivin the actor can be seen in this movie. His comic timing was as terrific as ever but his career defining scene was the 2nd intro with the beard with Murali Gopi's kalippu blazing in the background. The theatre exploded during this particular scene and the rise of a superstar was witnessed. The emotional scenes were also exceptionally done by Nivin. This man has left all his young peers in the background as is now surely Malayalam Cinema's most bankable star.
Sai Pallavi as Malar is the other revelation in Premam. She has completely toppled the notion that the leading lady has to have triple coat makeup and has to look ultra glamorous. The way her character is presented and the way the character behaves makes everyone have a soft corner towards malar. Apart from Nivin, Malar was the light and soul of the movie.
Supporting Cast was a fresh cast for Malayalam Cinema. George's friends in the movie Koya and Shambu played by Krishna Sankar and Shabhareesh Varma respectively were exceptional. My personal favorite was Girijan played by the wacky Sharafudeen. Anupama and Madonna who played Nivin's other love interests were good too.
Direction:
Alphonse Putharen has become the most hotshot director in Malayalam along with Jeethu Joseph and Anjali Menon with this movie. His screenplay was one of the best in Malayalam Cinema's recent past. He has executed a simple script in a mindblowing way. Alphonse Putharen's USP is raw style of filmmaking that we sometimes see in rustic tamil movies. As priyadarshan remarked, Alphose Putharen is the future inspiration of Malayalam Cinema.
Music and BGM:
Rajesh Murugesan who is an Alphonse Puthare Protegee gave the movie another life with his music and bgm. Malare is certainly the song of 2015.
Sound:
The sound by Sree Sankar and Vishnu govind who are also Alphonse Putharen protegees was terrific the like of which Malayalam Cinema has not experience before.
Cinematography:
Anend C Chandran , yet another Alphonse Putharen protegee was outstanding with his cinematography and is a valuable addition to Malayalam Cinema's growing repertoire in Cinematography
Production:
Everythin Anwar Rasheed touches turns to gold. He is inevitably the backbone of this movie.
Premam definitely has to be Malayalam Cinema's finest entertainer in 2015. Nivin Pauly is terrific and is now a superstar with Premam but Premam truly belongs to one Mr. Alphonse Putharen. Don miss it!!!
