Valencia dumped Monaco out of this season's Champions League despite losing 2-1 at the Stade Louis II on Tuesday, with the Spaniards progressing to the group stage 4-3 on aggregate.

With Los Che having triumphed 3-1 at Mestalla last week, Alvaro Negredo looked to have put the outcome beyond all doubt when he found the back of the net after just four minutes of play in the principality with a sublime chipped effort.

Rooney hat trick helps Man United advance; FC Astana though, Lazio out

Manchester United advanced to the Champions League group stages as Wayne Rooney netted a hat trick to help beat Club Brugge 4-0 in Belgium to advance 7-1 on aggregate.

Rooney opened his 2015-16 account with a dinked shot over the advancing Sinan Bolat after Memphis Depay's throughball put him in front of goal in the 20th minute.

Needing a reaction, Brugge had their best chance of the opening half in the 44th minute, but forward Abdoulay Diaby's attempt to round United keeper Sergio Romero saw him waste a golden opportunity.

Rooney scored a second just four minutes after the break, tapping home an Ander Herrera pass after a well-worked move, and then completed his hat trick eight minutes later, slotting under Bolat after again finding himself one-on-one with the Brugge keeper.

United then rounded off the scoring in the 63rd minute after a defence-splitting pass left Herrera alone to easily slot past the keeper.

Goals from Hakan Calhanoglu, Admir Mehmedi and Karim Bellarabi helped Bayer Leverkusen past Lazio 3-0 and advance 3-1 on aggregate.

Calhanoglu smashed home from close range in the 40th minute, then Mehmedi doubled advantage after finding the roof of stand-in keeper Etrit Berisha's net in the 48th, before Bellarabi sealed the tie with a strike two minutes from time.

Champions League group stage draw pots: United, City, Arsenal in Pot 2

The seedings for the Champions League group stage draw can be confirmed after the final qualifying ties were completed on Wednesday evening.

The eight top-seeded teams were already known, featuring the champions of the top eight leagues following a rule change starting this season. Pot 1 in the draw, which begins at 3.45pm GMT on Thursday, will feature Barcelona, along with Bayern Munich, Chelsea, Juventus, PSG, Benfica, Zenit, PSV Eindhoven.

In previous seasons all four pots were constructed based on UEFA's coefficient ranking, and that remains in place for the other three pools of clubs.

Roma were handed a boost on Tuesday when FC Basel's elimination at the hands of Maccabi Tel-Aviv meant they were elevated to pot 3 in place of the Swiss side. But there remains two teams from one of Europe's strongest leagues in pot 4, Bundesliga clubs Wolfsburg and Borussia Monchengladbach.

Arsenal, Manchester City and Manchester United all take their place in pot 2, alongside Spanish clubs Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid and Valencia. Leverkusen and FC Porto complete the pot.
