Default Madhuranaranga - Simple and sweet

    Show - 19-July-2015, 7 PM.
    Theatre- Galaxy Paradise, Bangalore
    Status - 40%

A quintessential a Malayalam movie. Light hearted moments blended with melodrama and mostly importantly retain a soul. Something we have been missing over time. Madhuranaranga ticks all of these boxes. The setting is quite novel in the midst of contemporary youth cinema and urban settings. Life of commoners in Dubai. The sights shoot for realism than a spectacle. Add a post-war Tamil majority Sri Lankan region and you have one of the better settings in recent history.

Title cards say the story is inspired from a real life incident and story never really deviates to an unbelievable phase barring cinematic liberties. Nishad Koya has written a good screenplay coupled with some light hearted dialogues that really utilize the strengths of the actors. He has established himself as a safe scenarist with this movie. Much better effort in comparison with Ordinary and Polytechnic. Speaking of Ordinary, Sugeeth in my opinion has done really well here. In spite of being a huge hit, I felt Ordinary was a genuinely ordinary film except for the novel setting and chemistry of the leads. Less said about his other films the better. Direction is quite neat. A little bit of trimming, especially a song or two, would have done a world of good for the pacing. Nonetheless, a good effort from him.

Chackochan is not having a good run in recent times despite a commendable performance in Chirakodinja Kinavukal. He has done justice to the role and fits the role to perfection. In spite of a commendable performance, can't help but wonder how a superior actor would have elevated the emotional scenes. But in 2015, either its Kunchacko Boban or we would have to invent a time machine to bring back Ms from their prime to better this performance. Biju Menon continues his good run. Another superlative performance. Same holds for Neeraj Madhav. Wonderful to see an young actor mature and blossom into a proven performer. The duo keeps the proceedings move along smoothly with lively banter and light hearted moments. Parvathy Ratheesh has made a stunning debut. Her role and performance is crucial to the film. A poor performance would have sealed the fate of the film. She has done really well as the destitute Sri Lankan tamil girl. She has nailed the naivety and vulnerability required for the role. If she can sustain her performance, she will be an asset to the industry.

Music is excellent at parts and middling for the most part. As mentioned earlier, the movie would have flowed better if they cut couple of songs. Cinematography is good with a realistic capture of dubai and Sri Lanka. Editing is adequate. Technically, the movie is adequate and feels quite contemporary.

    TL;DR:
Madhuranaranga is a sweet film. Packed with good performances . Emotional with the soul in its right place and caters to a mature audience.

    Rating - Very good. (3.75/5)
