Saw this film yesterday. I found it mostly engaging on the whole if you don't look for logic, but I did go in with the low expectation that it would be a predictable, Bollywood-like romantic film. Direction was mostly ok, the songs, cinematography, and performances were what made the film watchable for me ...the script was the major problem here and the reason it flopped. I don't think it deserved to be a disaster but def not more than average grosser. Some problems I had noted below (spoilers included!)
1) Our audience is not receptive to those typical Bollywood love stories. So if you are writing a cliche romantic story, you already are taking a big risk to begin with unless you do a really good job including/building scenes that connect the audience with the characters and their emotions (very hard to do with typical boy meets girl love stories)
2) Not enough time spent building the relationship between Jai and Tara outside of a few comedy scenes. Also poor rationale as to why older Jai suddenly repents for what he did 20 years back.
3) Poor depiction of how how Jai finds/meets Hima and why they started travelling together.
4) If Tara was such a big actress, wouldn't Jai (and the rest of the world) know already if she actually died?
5) Betrayal link was acceptable...but i dont get how Tara just shrugs it off and is ready to quietly accept him with open arms at the end. Felt like the movie reached a good level when Jay reveals the betrayal to Hima and then all of a sudden movie was wrapping up .
6) The depiction of Tara's character was inconsistent....they show her as rebellious and bold in certain scenes in the flashback, but then she's too scared to say no to the marriage and reject her BF/her fathers demands to act? Also she silently just goes with the guy when she and Jai get caught?
7) Songs were great to hear and watch, but some had bad placement (consecutive songs, illogical continuity with the story)
