How Khaya Zondo made his debut on Day 4 of second South Africa-Bangladesh Test

In a first in international cricket, two players from the South Africa team were withdrawn from the side that were facing Bangladesh in the second Test at Gqeberha and replaced with two 'COVID-19 substitute players', after the duo tested positive for COVID-19 on Monday morning.
Sarel Erwee and Wiaan Mulder were forced to withdraw from the Test due to positive COVID-19 tests ahead of Day four of the second Test, and they were replaced by Test debutant Khaya Zondo and Glenton Stuurman.

South Africa's Khaya Zondo on Day four of the second Test.

South Africa went onto win the second Test by 332 runs, as well as clinch the two-match series 2-0.
This was not the first time the series was affected by COVID-19. Bangladesh coach Russell Domingo tested positive for COVID-19 last week and was not able to attend this Test, as were South Africa's bowling coach Charl Langeveldt and security officer Zinaid Wadee.
Here, we explain everything about COVID-19 substitutes in cricket, when and why they were introduced:

    What are COVID-19 substitutions?
As the name suggests, COVID-19 substitutions happen when a player named in the XI starts showing COVID symptoms. This rule has been only applicable in Test cricket, and not in ODIs or T20s.

Why was this implemented and when was the decision of COVID-19 substitutes first taken?
It was on Monday morning that the official Twitter handle of Cricket South Africa (CSA) confirmed that Khaya Zondo would be making his Test debut on Day 4 of the second Test against Bangladesh.
"Khaya Zondo will make his Test debut on Day 4 of the 2nd #BetwayTest against Bangladesh after Sarel Erwee and Wiaan Mulder tested positive for Covid-19. The pair will be replaced with Zondo and Glenton Stuurman," CSA had tweeted.
It thus became the first recorded instance of COVID-19 substitutions in international cricket since the rule was introduced, and also the first time players were being replaced midway through the contest after testing positive for the virus.
Back in June 2020, the ICC’s Chief Executive Committee (CEC) had approved the usage of COVID-19 substitutes, albeit only in Test cricket.

A statement from ICC had mentioned that in line with the concussion replacements, the official Match Referee would approve only like-for-like replacements as far as COVID-19 substitutes were concerned.
“Teams will be allowed to replace players displaying symptoms of COVID-19 during a Test match. In line with concussion replacements, the Match Referee will approve the nearest like-for-like replacement.
“However, the regulation for COVID-19 replacements will not be applicable in ODIs and T20Is,” the ICC had stated in a media release back then.
At the time of making the decision, COVID-19 substitutes were among the interim changes brought in by the ICC, along with banning use of saliva (which was made permanent this year) and non-neutral umpires.

Madhya Pradesh's wins maiden Ranji Trophy title

Madhya Pradesh are the Ranji Trophy 2021-22 champions, 69 years after they last won the coveted trophy in their former avatar, as Holkar, and 23 years since they last had a shot at Indian domestic cricket's biggest prize. At the same venue of their 1998-99 heartbreak, MP redeemed themselves in the best way possible, vanquishing 41-time champions Mumbai to lift the trophy on a cloudy Sunday afternoon.
Victory was achieved shortly before tea on the fifth day when Rajat Patidar pushed Sarfaraz Khan for a single wide of point as MP had converted potentially tricky 108 chase into a cruise. Patidar, whose 122 helped set up MP's 162-run lead in the first innings, was 34 not out, along with Aditya Shrivastava, the captain.

    Madhya Pradesh 536 (Dubey 133, Patidar 122, Shubham 116, Mulani 5-173) and 108 for 4 (Mantri 37, Patidar 30*) beat Mumbai 374 (Sarfaraz 134, Jaiswal 78, Yadav 4-106) and 269 (Parkar 51, Sarfaraz 45, Kartikeya 4-98 ) by six wickets

IPL franchise owners buy all six teams in South Africa's new T20 league

CSK made the highest bid for the Johannesburg franchise, while Mumbai bought the Cape Town team

The global footprint of the IPL is expanding swiftly with its franchise owners set to buy all six teams in South Africa's new T20 league, the inaugural edition of which is scheduled for January 2023.
ESPNcricinfo has learned that Mumbai Indians, Chennai Super Kings, Lucknow Super Giants, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Rajasthan Royals and one of the owners of Delhi Capitals have successfully bid for the franchises. The league will be run by Cricket South Africa in partnership with television broadcaster SuperSport.
It is understood that CSK, through parent company Chennai Super Kings Sports Limited, made the highest bid at an informal auction to buy the Johannesburg franchise. Mumbai Indians, owned by Reliance Industries, bought the Cape Town franchise, while the Sun TV Group, which owns Sunrisers, bought the Port Elizabeth franchise.
The RP Sanjeev Goenka group, which paid a record sum of INR 7090 crore to buy the Lucknow IPL franchise late last year, picked up the Durban team, while Rajasthan Royals bought the Paarl team. Pretoria has been taken by Jindal South West Sports, which is headed by Parth Jindal, co-owner of the Delhi Capitals in IPL.
While Cricket South Africa (CSA) is expected to make a formal announcement of the new owners and the cities they will represent once the paperwork is complete, the board has announced former South Africa captain Graeme Smith as the overall head of the T20 league. One of Smith's early targets is to ensure that the deals with the franchise owners are watertight.
"I'm extremely honoured to be entrusted with leading this exciting new venture," Smith said. "I'm deeply committed to South African cricket and happy to serve the game as best I can. I'm excited by the opportunity to deliver the new league, which I believe will be an extremely competitive product, one that can bring the much-needed investment into the game and provide new opportunities for players around the world and more importantly to our SA home grown talent.
"The response from stakeholders has been very positive thus far and we've made great progress in the initial stages. We're determined to deliver a valuable, sustainable and appealing tournament for South African cricket."

    IPL franchise owners go global

With the league still in its early planning stages, it could not be confirmed whether CSA will conduct a player auction or draft to form the six teams. Another question is whether the BCCI will make an allowance for Indian players to participate in the league. So far the BCCI has barred Indian players from featuring in the T20 leagues of other countries to protect the IPL brand.

There is no such restriction on the IPL franchise owners, who have steadily made acquisitions in overseas T20 leagues. Red Chillies Entertainment, the owners of Kolkata Knight Riders, were the first to buy an overseas T20 franchise - the Trinbago Knight Riders in the Caribbean Premier League. In 2020, KPH Dream Cricket Private Limited, the consortium that owns Punjab Kings, bought the St Lucia Kings and last year the owners of Rajasthan Royals - the Royals Sports Group - bought the Barbados team in the CPL.
Red Chillies Entertainment, co-owned by Bollywood actors Shah Rukh Khan, Juhi Chawla and her husband Jay Mehta, has also bought a team in UAE's T20 League - the International League T20 (ILT20). Reliance Strategic Business Ventures Limited, a subsidiary of Reliance Industries Limited, the owners of Mumbai Indians, and the GMR Group - a co-owner of Delhi Capitals - have also bought teams in the ILT20. The UAE league is scheduled between January 6 and February 12 next year and will clash with the South African league.
The Knight Riders brand also has a presence in the USA, where it is among the founding members of Major League Cricket, a franchise-based T20 League scheduled to be launched from 2023. There is at least one more IPL franchise that is keep on entering the Major League T20, but has not yet formally closed the agreement.

Sam Northeast Scripts History With Unbeaten 410-run Knock in English County Championship

The 32-year-old went to his 400 with a six back over the bowler's head, following up with another six from the next delivery.

Sam Northeast registered the highest score of 21st century in first-class cricket with an astonishing 410-run* knock in the English County Championship match between Glamorgan and Leicestershire. Brian Lara scored 400* against England in 2004 and after that Northeast is the only batter to breach the 400-run mark in first-class cricket.

It is just the 11th individual score of 400-plus in the history of first-class cricket. The right-handed batter had a chance to break Lara’s record of the highest individual score - 501 but Glamorgan declared their innings at 795/5 on Day 4 against Leicestershire. It is now placed at the ninth-highest first-class score of all time.
The total of 795-5 is the highest in the Welsh county’s history, beating the previous record of 718-3 in 2000 and Northeast now has the highest individual score in the county’s history, beating Steve James’s 309 not out in the same match 22 years ago.
While it is the third-highest score in the history of the County Championship which dates back to 1890.
The 32-year-old breached the 400-run mark in an emphatic fashion with a six back over the bowler’s head, following up with another six from the next delivery. His 450-ball knock was laced with 45 fours and three sixes.

Sri Lankan cricketers have become bus drivers in Australia to make ends meet

International cricketers from Sri Lanka are now working as bus drivers in Melbourne, Australia. Accompanying them is a former Zimbabwean international cricketer who is also driving a bus in the same city. All three of them work for Transdev, which employs more than 1,200 employees and offers transport services to the people residing in the city.

Former Sri Lankan spinner Suraj Randiv and Chinthaka Jayasinghe are now employees with Transdev and drive passengers around the city. Former Zimbabwean cricketer Waddington Mwayenga is also working as a bus driver.
The cricketers are quite fulfilled with the job and they are still hopeful to play cricket in the Big Bash League of Australia. All of them also practice regularly and are ready to get a chance in cricket again.
All three former cricketers are settled in Melbourne and make their living by driving the bus. Currently, the economy and government of Sri Lanka have crashed and the citizens are protesting against the government to restore order. But we are not sure when these cricketers decided to leave the country and take up another job in a foreign country.
The Australian transport minister said that there can be any famous popular personality on the driving seat of the Transdev bus. Even many passengers sometimes recognise the cricketers and interact with them.
