Prithvi Shaw makes second-highest Ranji Trophy score of all time

He scored a 383-ball 379, ending a run of poor form in the tournament this season

Prithvi Shaw's 379 is the highest Ranji Trophy score in the 21st century

Prithvi Shaw has made the second-highest Ranji Trophy score of all time. The opener, resuming on an overnight score of 240, began the second day of Mumbai's Group B match against Assam in ominous manner, scoring 139 runs off 99 balls before he was out for 379.
Bhausaheb Nimbalkar, who scored an unbeaten 443 for Maharashtra against Kathiawar back in December 1948, continues to hold the record for the highest Ranji Trophy score and the highest first-class score by an Indian batter. Shaw, however, has now moved up to No. 2 on both those lists.

On Wednesday, Shaw became the ninth batter to go past 350 in a Ranji innings, and went past Swapnil Gugale (351*), Cheteshwar Pujara (352), VVS Laxman (353), Samit Gohel (359*), Vijay Merchant (359*), MV Sridhar (366) and Sanjay Manjrekar (377). Just when he seemed poised to hurtle past 400 and beyond, though, he was lbw to the legspinner Riyan Parag in what turned out to be the last over before lunch.
Shaw dominated all three partnerships he was involved in, scoring 75 out of a first-wicket stand of 123 with Musheer Khan, 42 out of a second-wicket stand of 74 with Armaan Jaffer, and 262 out of the 401 he put on with Mumbai captain Ajinkya Rahane for the third wicket.

The innings ended a run of poor form for Shaw, who had begun the Ranji season with only one fifty in his first seven innings, and potentially brought him back into the reckoning for an India spot. Shaw, who has played five Tests, six ODIs and one T20I, last played for India in July 2021, during a limited-overs tour of Sri Lanka.
In an interview with Sportstar at the end of day one, Shaw had spoken about the challenges of managing expectations and dealing with criticism.
"I have realised that whenever you score runs, you are on top of the world," he said. "But when you don't score then people will come after you. Expectations kaafi rehte hai [there are quite a lot of expectations] when you score regularly, so when you suddenly get out early in three or four innings, people start thinking 'yaar, yeh hai woh hai [people start questioning you].'

"Only you know whether you are following the process, or whether you are being disciplined more than before, are you sleeping on time, eating well before a game. All those things matter. I am just trying to follow those things and I am trying to spend time alone as much as possible. I cut out the outside noise - be it on social media or in other platforms.
"I try to avoid those things or at times, just ask my manager to handle social-media activities. I have brand commitments, and that's why it is not possible to stay away from social media, and thus, you eventually end up seeing what's being written or spoken about. But I am still trying to cut out the noise as much as possible.
"People are talking about you and then will continue doing the same even after 10 years, so you should not think too much about it, because if you start reading too much between the lines, you will be affecting yourself."

Jaydev Unadkat leads from the front as Saurashtra win second Ranji Trophy title
Captain grabbed 6 for 85 in the second innings, as hosts Bengal suffered a batting collapse of 5 for 11 on fourth morning

The victorious Saurashtra team after winning their second Ranji Trophy

    Saurashtra 404 (Vasavada 81, Jani 60, Mukesh 4-111) and 14 for 1 (V Jadeja 10*, Desai 4*, Deep 1-5) beat Bengal 174 (Shahbaz 69, A Porel 50, Sakariya 3-33) and 241 (Tiwary 68, Majumdar 61, Unadkat 6-85) by nine wickets

A run-out. Of a key home batter. At the non-striker's end. At Eden Gardens, much to the anguish of the crowd. Rings a bell? It brought heartbreak to India in that famous 1999 Test against Pakistan; it inflicted a massive heartbreak to Bengal in their 2022-23 Ranji Trophy final against Saurashtra on Sunday.

Shahbaz Ahmed is no Sachin Tendulkar, but Bengal's hopes of whittling down their deficit and opening up a lead they could try and defend depended on his partnership with his captain Manoj Tiwary. When they resumed on the fourth day still 63 behind, this was the stand Bengal would have hoped would get them into the lead and beyond.

Those hopes came crashing down just like that, after a grave misjudgment in trying to steal a third run in the sixth over of the day. Could they have just settled for two? Perhaps. Was there a chance of a third? Definitely. Was there a miscommunication? Most definitely.

Tiwary's neat flick through midwicket nearly went to the boundary. But Arpit Vasavada gave it a chase from the infield like his life depended on it. And in one motion, he not just retrieved the ball but also fired a superb throw on the bounce to Jaydev Unadkat. Tiwary, who had initially called for the third, then froze.

By then, Shahbaz had already turned and was more than halfway down the pitch. He didn't even bother looking back as Unadkat pounced on the ball to knock off the bails and celebrate wildly. A crestfallen Tiwary looked heavenwards, not wanting to make eye contact while a disappointed Shahbaz yanked his gloves and stormed off. At 194 for 5, Bengal were still 36 behind.

With a rookie in Abishek Porel and the lower order to follow, the onus was now on Tiwary to put behind him the run-out. But it seemed as if it was playing on his mind over and over again. A nothing waft to gully off Unadkat two overs after Shahbaz's wicket all but sealed Bengal's fate.

Jaydev Unadkat sliced through Bengal's line-up

Tiwary's slow walk back for a defiant 67 told you a story - of being so near, yet so far. This was his fourth crack at Indian domestic cricket's biggest prize, and in all probability, the fourth time the title was going to elude him. Laxmi Ratan Shukla, the coach, didn't waste a moment in walking over to quietly to give Tiwary a pat, even though he knew it was game over.

By then, Bengal's lower order had decided they were going to throw their bats at everything. And in doing so, there were some mistakes and wholesome entertainment all at once, as Abishek pulled one straight down to deep square off Chetan Sakariya.

Soon after, Unadkat once again showed his absolute mastery with the old ball in reversing it from around the wicket to have Akash Deep lbw, and Akash Ghatak clean bowled for his fifth wicket. Ishan Porel and Mukesh Kumar then swung their bats at everything and wiped out the deficit, much to the dressing room's amusement. When Unadkat ended the innings with a slower ball to flatten Ishan's stumps, Saurashtra had to come out and knock off only 12 runs to win.

A jubilant Sheldon Jackson sprinted to the stumps to pick one for posterity, only to be told there was a simple matter of knocking off a handful of runs. But that didn't take long to come, and while they lost Jay Gohil, his opening partner Hardik Desai and Vishwaraj Jadeja brought up victory soon after with a boundary.

The entire Saurashtra team sprinted on to the field. They huddled together, gave each other big bear hugs. Mount Kolkata had been breached. Three years ago, they had beaten Bengal on a slowburn of a Rajkot deck for the maiden title. Now, they had breached Bengal's fortress on an Eden green top. Victory couldn't have been sweeter.

Isle of Man bowled out for 10, lowest total in men's T20Is

Seven ducks in the Isle of Man scorecard; Spain take two balls to seal win

Spain 13 for 0 (Awais 12*) beat Isle of Man 10 (Joseph 4, Kamran 4-4, Mehmood 4-6) by ten wickets

Isle of Man were skittled out for 10, the lowest total in men's T20s by Spain on on Sunday. It then took Spain all of two balls to chase the score down as they romped home to a near-perfect ten-wicket win with 118 balls remaining.

Isle of Man fell below Sydney Thunder, who had slumped to 15 all out in 5.5 overs against Adelaide Strikers in the BBL earlier this year. Turkey had previously held the lowest score in T20s when they were bundled out for 21 against Czech Republic in 2019.

Coming into Cartagena with an unassailable 4-0 lead in a six-match series after the second T20I was washed out, hosts Spain did not put a foot wrong. Mohammad Kamran and Atif Mehmood picked up four wickets each, with three maidens and ten runs between them in a collective eight-over spell. Kamran's spell also included a hat-trick as Isle of Man were rolled over in no time. Lorne Burns followed the left-arm seamers to finish off the innings four balls into the ninth over.

After the hosts chose to field, Kamran set the tone by nicking off Adam McAuley off the first ball. Mehmood trapped George Burrows lbw and Kamran picked up a hat-trick run in the next over by knocking over Luke Ward, Edward Beard, and Christian Webster to reduce the score to 5 for 4.

Mehmood followed with a double-wicket over which included the wicket of Joseph Burrows, the top scorer of the innings with four runs. Fraser Clarke's duck was the fifth among the seven in total, but he faced 12 balls that stretched the innings into the ninth over, where Burns' clean-up job completed the innings.

In reply, Joseph started with a no-ball to Awais Ahmed. While that didn't go for runs, the free hit and the following ball were smashed over the boundary to seal a remarkable win and a 5-0 sweep.
