Namibia's Jan Nicol Loftie-Eaton smashes fastest T20I century

    Namibia's Jan Nicol Loftie-Eaton

NEW DELHI: Namibia's Jan Nicol Loftie-Eaton etched his name in cricketing history by smashing the fastest century in T20 Internationals (T20Is), achieving the remarkable feat in just 33 balls against Nepal.
In the inaugural match of the Nepal Tri-Nation T20I series against the hosts, Loftie-Eaton's scintillating knock steered Namibia to a commanding position after a shaky start.Coming in when his team was struggling at 62/3 in the 11th over against the Rhinos, Loftie-Eaton unleashed a breathtaking display of attacking cricket, propelling Namibia past the 200-run mark.

With an astonishing array of strokes, Loftie-Eaton blasted 11 fours and eight sixes en route to his phenomenal century, reaching 101 off just 36 deliveries. He sealed the hundred with a boundary on the 33rd ball, eclipsing the previous record held by Nepal's Kushal Malla, who achieved a century off 34 balls against Mongolia last year.

Loftie-Eaton's explosive innings powered Namibia to a formidable total of 206/4 in their allotted 20 overs. Despite valiant efforts from Nepal's batsmen including Rohit Paudel, Kushal Malla, Dipendra Singh Airee, and Sompal Kami, the hosts fell short by 20 runs in their pursuit of the target.
In addition to his blistering batting performance, Loftie-Eaton also made significant contributions with the ball, claiming two wickets with his spin bowling. His all-round brilliance earned him the prestigious Player of the Match award, cementing his place in T20I folklore.

Shabnim Ismail bowls fastest ball in women's cricket history in DC vs MI WPL 2024 match

Shabnim Ismail, the former South Africa pacer, on Tuesday, broke the record for the fastest ball bowled in women’s cricket when she fired one in at 132.1 kph while playing a WPL 2024 match for Mumbai Indians against Delhi Capitals at the Arun Jaitely Stadium in New Delhi.

Shabnim Ismail's delivery - the first-ever by a women’s cricketer that breached the 130kph barrier - was the second ball of the third over of the match that struck DC captain Meg Lanning on the pads. MI went up in an appeal but was turned down by the umpire.

The ex-South African quick, who also held the record for the previous fastest ball - 128 kph against West Indies in 2016 and 127 kph - twice during the 2022 ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup, retired following last year’s T20 WC.
Ismail however did not have the greatest outings as he got walloped for 46 runs, including getting hit for three consecutive sixes by Shafali Verma in her third over. When asked if she was aware of the record, Ismail said she doesn’t actually “look at the big screen when bowling."

    P Ravi Achan

Kochi: Paliath Ravi Achan, a legend of Kerala cricket, passed away at Tripunithura here on Monday. He was 96.
Ravi Achan, the first Kerala player to cross 1,000 runs and bag 100 wickets in first-class cricket, played a huge role in promoting the game in the state.

He was popular around the Tripunithura Cricket Club, which was his home turf. But Ravi Achan also became known as captain of the state team on several occasions.

As a leg-break bowler and sometimes medium pacer, Ravi Achan gave a memorable performance in Kerala's historic 34-run win over Andhra in the 1960-61 season. He famously scored a 70 in a Ranji Trophy match at the age of 40.

He was born on March 12, 1928, and was educated in Tripunithura, Thrissur and later at the Annamalai University in Tamil Nadu, where he was attracted to cricket. He became active in the game during his Law College days in Ernakulam.
His performances in the Pooja Cricket Tournament held in his hometown paved the way for his entry to the Ranji team. In his debut first-class match in 1952, against Mysore, Ravi Achan top scored with 43 runs while his Thiru Kochi side folded for a paltry 86. He went on to play well into his 40s.
