Ennu Ninte Moideen is definitely one of the best romantic films ever made. The film will definitely leave you some kinda impact.
The film is based on the real life tragic story of BP Moideen and Kanchanamala which everyone of us might have heard by now. The film explores that story a bit deeper and tries to show the bigger picture.
Even though they are from different religions(Muslim guy and Hindu woman in this film) and are from 2 of the most affluent families of the region, they fall for each other because they share same socialist ideologies and have a mutual respect. Fact that they are not practicing their respective religions and they both are good looking may have played a part as well.To be frank, film doesn't really explain that but instead focuses on the hardship and some real struggles they face during their relationship as their families(obviously) oppose it.
Unlike some of the other romantic films, which usually show the couple as good and everyone else who oppose them as bad, this film shows a wider picture.
And except maybe Kanchana's uncle(played by Sivaji Guruvayoor), everyone else oppose them for a reason. Moideen's father(Saikumar) is staunchly against because he thinks it causes a communal friction in the region. A surprisingly good Bala (who plays Sethu), never approves the affair between his best friend and his sister- but he is so concerned for his sister that he never gets married as well. Then there is Kanchana's cousin Appu(Tovino Thomas) who also sincerely loves Kanchana and waits decades for her unconditionally. Rest of the supporting cast includes Lena,Sudheer Karamana,Vaigha,Sudheesh etc.
Coming to the lead actors, both Prithviraj and Parwathy were just brilliant. Some of his mannerisms can be seen here but his dialogue delivery was just outstanding and really understood the character.
I once read that the director (debutant RS Vimal) just wanted the whole Kerala to know about their stories. In that sense, he fully succeeded and the films definitely deserves the accolades it is receiving. He made a rather tragic story a very interesting watch. The script, especially some of the dialogues, is really good. Film is solid in the technical front as well, especially songs, production design, costumes.
But as with every other films, this film too has its faults. I'm not really happy with the running length of the film(2:50, probably as a result of stylish shots). Also I don't understand the extensive use of rain in the background through out the film. The BGM towards the climax is also very distracting( I think I heard the"masha Allah" chants during that tragedy). But again, these are forgettable.
Sometimes, real life stories are made to less impressive films( like the recent Maanjhi). But in this film, the director has hit the right notes for most of the time. The film has a soul and is an almost perfect tribute to the real life Moideen and Kachanamala.
Way to go RS Vimal.
