Thanks bhaiiiii
There is a certain charm that Malayalam movies possessed compared to its other southern contemporaries. It was the skill of telling a story rooted in simplicity, honesty without having to resort to absurdity, stupidity and very importantly vulgarity. An audience who were both intelligent and tasteful and did not need story telling to be sugar coated with so called 'mass elements'. Malayalam movies kept the audience engaged, made them smile, think, laugh and cry without resorting to the extra ordinary. These are the Malayalam movies I fell in love with and when the last few decades were lost to blind following of overweight old men and their inhuman abilities to fight evil, one lost hope whether the golden age of Malayalam cinema will ever comeback again. They say faith is always rewarded and perhaps the recent few years have provided a few sparks that might set alight the flame that was good quality Malayalam cinema.
Movie: Charlie
Venue: Cineworld Queenslinks, Aberdeen 14:50 show
Occupancy: 95%
The movie: Splendid. Made me laugh, scenes that made my eyes moist and ultimately left the theater smiling.
Small moments were brilliantly done, roles that came and went but had an impact. I never felt the movie was stretched or bored. Packaged very very well.
Actors:
DQ, he is growing and growing fast. A role that could have been easily messed up was essayed with ease and sheer confidence. Scenes where he portrayed anger was brilliant, never went over the top but used his eyes and sound to good effect. Blessed with an actor's voice and modulates it well. I respect the fact that he sees himself as an actor first rather than a star, something that's lost on todays movie industry. The big M's stardom was born out of years of portraying good roles well and not the other way round. 'Ee monn vannathe chumma pookan allaa!!'
Parvathi, Super. Obviously different from the quiet Kanchanamala, Tessa was boisterous, enthusiastic, curious but never loud. Fitted the role to a T, well portrayed. Really liked her exchange with KPAC Lalitha. Moments of her amazement on seeing Charlie's stuff and how her admiration grew were very well done.
The casting was brilliant apart from Nasser who was out of place and over the top. Not really required.
Nedumudi Venu, Aparna, Chemban Vinod, P.Blachandran, Neeraj, Tovino, Renji Panicker.... all did really well in their small roles. Special mentions to Soubin and KPAC Lalitha who stole the moments they were in.
Director and team:
Hats off to Martin and his technical crew. What a well done job. Kept us entertained throughout. Special mention to Gopi Sundar, excellent background music! Small moments of hilarity was never out of place, like the time the cleaner appears. Splendid. Three very good movies back to back for Martin, may you grow from strength to strength.
3.75/5
What a year for Malayalam cinema Premam, Mili, Pathemari, Moideen, Josekutty and now Charlie
