No Doubt, Malayalam Cinema is changing gear these days…..Over the last five years or so, a handful of directors have emerged, bringing in some relief from the monotony of rehashed formulaic films of the reigning superstars……Their works were much appreciated by the film goers…Nevertheless there remained some scepticism over the “New Gen Entertainers” being too much the city –based in content and flavour…Here comes “Maheshinte Pratikaram”, Dileesh Pothan’s directorial debut, which delivers something that Mollywood has badly missed for quite a long time……The locally flavoured entertainers for which the Mollywood of late 80s and early 90s were famous……
What makes it special?
“Maheshinte Prathikaram” is made off incredibly delicate, water- thin plot, which on paper doesn’t look strong enough for a commercially viable Malayalam Movie. However, the moment the film starts running, it’s hard to take your eyes away from the screen, something most of our contemporary film fails to do…..Yes, the Magic that enlivens a film into a work of art is visibly present here. With love, action, frustration, music, humour etc in right proportions, the film easily touches the soft corners in the heart of viewers and tickles the funny bones at regular intervals, without resorting to crassness or sentimentalism……..the Movie delivers an experience similar to the one felt by most readers while reading some short stories of the legendary Basheer…..
Delicate Plot
The film focuses the life of the photographer, Mahesh his love interest, his humiliation, frustration, his evolution as an artist and person and his final revenge……
Much Improved Syam Pushkar
The improvement in the writing of Syam Pushkar is immediately felt here with Syam carefully avoiding the little blemishes apparent in his previous feel-good movies like “Salt & Pepper” (where the cliché driven second half lagged ) and “Da Thadiyai “ (where the movie was felt more like a sermon and propaganda). But, in “Maheshinte Pratikaram”, syam has avoided the preachy pretentions otherwise the movie certainly would have been compared to the vintage movies of Sathyan-Sreeni combo. As far as clichés are concerned, syam had done enough work in creating fresh situations and dialogues that helps to overcome the unavoidable clichés part and parcel of of romances……Another impressive factor about the writing was the natural flow of scenes which at no time never felt contrived……
Direction: Top Class
Dileesh Pothan has made a sensational debut as a director…….The climatic fight scenes, The Scenes where Mahesh clicks his best ever shot: “Cover Photo”, the interval punch scene…..thsese scenens are enough to announce that Dileesh Pothan has arrived in Mollywood…..
Fahad Does it again!
The versatile actor has once again proved his prowess in depicting ultra-rustic characters…..With performances in “Annayum Rasulum” and “Oru Indian Pranayakadha” to his credit, Fahad Fazil was at its ridiculous ease as Mahesh, the title character…..It also marks the return of the actor after a series of duds at the Box Office…..Fahad makes it appear that there is none other than him to do the rustic lead roles to perfection.
Excellent Performances
Aparna Balamurali makes a huge impression as female lead, while Anusree keeps up her good performances….Some good news for those lamenting the loss of great support actors like Oduvil Unnikrishnan, Jagathy Sreekumar etc….It’s heartening to see actors like Alancier Lay (Babychan), Jaffer (Soumya’s father), Soubin (Crispin) playing their supporting roles to perfection……
Verdict
Excellent Feel Good Entertainer……Higly Recommended for those who love the genre of feel good movies!
Recommendation & A word of caution
A word of Caution for the viewers preparing to watch this movie hearing overwhelming positive opinion among moviebuffs…….As pointed out before, the movie is not heavily loaded contentwise or entertainment wise which might disappoint the purists, looking for either a content oriented movie or a high doze of entertainment…….The film offers a cool watch for those willing to spend 2 hours for simple, unadultered pleasure, something we derive while reading short stories of the Sulthan (Basheer)
