    Default Leela - nith tom's review #20

    Theatre : Lakshmi, Tavarekere, Bangalore.
    Show time : 9.45 p.m.
    Status : 60%

After a long time I was compelled to write a review for this movie because the reactions of some of the audience who couldn't understand a thing from the movie got me disturbed and frustrated. Even people sitting next to me at the theatre were abusing the makers after the movie, and demanding a refund.

As everyone would be knowing by now, this movie is not everyone's cup of tea, and of course the clean 'U' certificate could be misleading, 'U/A' would have been better. Without reading Unni.R's short story 'Leela' and not trying to intrepret his thoughts, if you end up watching this cult classic , I'm sure you would be in for the worst movie experience of your life. And this is where the makers have failed miserably, in conveying their thoughts to the average movie - goer. Many of them couldn't understand the climax, and some others were expecting something else. Were they expecting another ' Vellimoonga' from Biju menon? I couldn't understand.

'Leela' is one of the best literary adaptations I have ever seen on the silver screen and Renjith has done an excellent job. From the moment I finished reading the story, I was literally counting days for the movie's release, trying to imagine how Renjith would portray the much haunting climax. The inclusion of an angel was may be an attempt to make people understand, and I kind of liked the idea.

Biju menon, Vijayaraghavan, Indrans and Jagadhish were all at their very best to give me such an enriching experience. Many reviews said Parvathy Nambiar was stone faced, but that's what the character of 'Leela' demands, a girl who has lost all hope about the world in which she lives.

Finally, I have to console myself saying that some stories and movies are much ahead of their time and these kind of master craftsmanship are of the fate to be labelled as 'Bujism'.

    Rating : 4/5
    Verdict : Flop ( Such a pity).
