Padayottam - 1982
Pride of Malayalam cinema.
Inspired from Alexander Dumas' classic 'The Count of Monte Christo'
India's first indigenous 70 mm movie.
Directed by Jijo , the movie had arguably the greatest star cast in the history of Malayalam cinema...
Prem Nazir, Madhu,Mammooty,Mohanlal,Shankar,Lakshmi,Poornima Jayaram ...in the same screen!!
The revenge saga had everything in it. Love, romance, fight, dance, thrill, betrayal, hardships, emot ions, sufferings,perseverance,revenge,sacrifice.....and what not?
Ramachandrababu was the cinematographer of this epic. 7 years later he would weild the camera for OVVG as well!
The movie had 3 songs penned by Kavalam and set to tunes by Guna Singh. Azhikkanghe karayundo was really emotional.
Thatheyyathom and Nirathi oro karukkal blended so well with the mood of the movie.
Prem Nazir delivered a knockout performance as Udayanan. One of his all time best. He was so sensitive in the scenes in the ship and during the revenge.
Madhu,Lakshmi and Poornima did their part well. Mammooty had a meaty villain role in Kammaran. But he could not bring a polished touch to that role. Mohanlal and Shankar too struggled.
Probably all the three Young actors were a bit overawed by the grandiosity of the movie, so early in their career.
Padayottam doesn't look out of place even today. It is indeed an important milestone in the history of Malayalam cinema. A must watch for the students of Malayalam cinema.
