First half review
Let me just start by admitting that the trailer of Thugs of Hindostan did not do any justice to what the movie looks like till intermission. With Thugs Of Hindostan, the two stalwarts of Hindi cinema, Amitabh Bachchan and Aamir Khan have come together and the sheer magnanimity of the same will leave you overwhelmed. Director Victor has made sure to make it a visual spectacle with a few scenes especially including the entry scene of Amitabh Bachchan as Khudabaksh, or the action sequences that are going to stay with you.
The story essentially revolves around Zafira (Fatima Sana Shaikh) who loses her dream castle, her family, her dad, everything to the Firangis, who invaded India and her dynasty, Raunakpur, in the name of friendship. Khudabaksh, the masiya (protector) of the realm, is her guardian and her pillar. On the other hand, Aamir aka Firangi is a flamboyant, selfish and extremely witty kind of a person on face but there are layers to him which the movie keeps exploring throughout. Katrina Kaif (Suraiyya) makes a hit and miss appearance within first half an hour but does nothing much than adding a glam quotient.
Watching Big B perform those high octane stunts at this age and convincingly so is an exhilarating experience in itself.
However, the songs of the movie are flat and doesn?t really add much to the story. Also, the choreography is too modern for a film set in 1795.
Moving over, what really left me a bit disappointed was that very little attention was paid to the dialect and language of the bygone era. It is too colloquial for a period film. The screenplay could have been a little tight and crisp but nonetheless, the movie looks like a perfect masala entertainment till intermission.
