Lal - Priyan combo's recent films were dissappointing due to which I did not have any expectation on this film until its trailer and songs were released. After seeing the trailers and songs of Onam releases I had highest expectation on this movie. Did it leave up to those expectations - Well 1st half did not leave up to those expectations, but Interval and 2nd half till Climax portions matched those expectations. Climax was just okay.
1st Half sets the background of Lal's character. The usual Nanma niranja Naayaka kadhaapaathram. Pinne andhan aanenkilum endhum cheyunna character. Totally unconvincing. Should have done a better justice to the blind character. The only relief in first half is Mamukoya comedies. Otherwise it would have been a big let down. Along with establishing the character makers also tried to build up a mystery around the Nedumudi's character and kid's character. The high range locations are really nice and well shot in those sequences but the mystery failed to make viewers thrilled. Then towards the interval comes the Marriage Song, Vimala Raman's dialogues before the marriage song - Koovi polickum aalukal in Single Screen. Entammo. Priyanonnum ithracku bodham ille. Adho Vimala Raman endhenkilum kodutho inganeyokke parayippickan. After that horrible songs with age old steps of Priyan songs, comes the turning point of the film. From then till interval it is Kidu. Well shot and superb thrills. Killer is also revealed at this point.
2nd half starts with a good comedy sequence by Mamukoya and Police. Off to a very good start. Then starts the cat and mouse game between the Killer and Lal. There are some very good episodes during this Cat and Mouse game especially some sequences in the shop. One basic logical question that still bugged me throughout this half is why is Killer's identity not revealed to Police by Lal's character. That is still a mystery for me Anyway 2nd half takes the movie into right track till the pre-climax sequence. Pre-climax sequence lags big time and climax is very predictable and just okay. If climax was worked upon little more, it would have been a great watch. We can still forgive the first half for that excellent 2nd half if Climax was done well. The police station sequence in this half is too good !!!
Overall an above average thriller, which thrills the viewers from pre-interval sequence till pre-climax sequence.
Positives
Mohanlal - It is a treat to watch our Lal in a common man Avatar.
Songs except Marriage Song
Maamukoya
Negatives
1st Half
Portrayal of Blind by Lal - The mannerisms of an ordinary man is well brought out by Lal, but the mannerisms of a Blind is seriously lacking throughout the portrayal of his character
Vimala Raman, Manikuttan, Innocent - All characters are artificial to the core
Crowd Response - Claps for several scenes in 2nd half. After climax some claps here and there. Kuzhappamilla enna response aanu koodudhalum kettadhu, chilar nalladhennum. Aarum mosam parayunnadhu kettilla.
Summary - Overall an above average thriller, which thrills the viewers from pre-interval sequence till pre-climax sequence..
Rating - 3 / 5
