Thanks......
Oppam, without a doubt should be Priyadarshan’s most sincere effort in a long time. The director explores the mystery genre with a fresh cast and has made a movie set to today’s times. But the film lacks one of director’s prime strengths, the pacing. Oppam has a terrific premise of which a Drishyam could be made and Mohanlal sinks his teeth into the title role but film is far from perfect. The first half particularly suffers from a disjointed screenplay – a dramatic moment is followed by a song, the film takes too much to time to strum up some intrigue. Movie picks up from the brilliant interval portion, and second half has moments that generate interest. But the film desperately needed a no-nonsense filmmaker like Jeethu Joseph or Ranjith, Priyadarshan is more interested in technique and sleekness that he lets the tension evaporate by overtly stretching some sequences including the climax.
Couple of twists in the film can be predicted from a mile away, and the entire film hinges on a backstory that is not entirely convincing. The cast except for likes of Vimala Raman and Bineesh Kodiyeri was pretty effective.
Overall Oppam is a film with string of interesting ideas but falls short of being a taut thriller.
