I saw many degrading as kayamkulam umesh!!
In the movie he is a normal guy of that time until the turning point happens, so his portrayal is justified as per the movie. Also no one living now has any idea how young guys of that time behaved...so it could be purely the director's decision to go for such a casual cheesy portrayal. There are enough NP movies where he has shown "non umesh like" mannerisms when the script demanded it.
Director should have made some changes in appearance to give more apt look of that time., but then it would not give the needed impact for the transformation.
If you take away the umesh like portrayal from the initial part of movie - it would have made movie more dull. So I feel may be it was a deliberate move from director. His intention was not to make a class movie...with a huge budget..to recover he went for an entertainer...
Also selfie Umesh & TM vinod are two great characters given by NP which even a fahad fazil would come short of delivering.
