there is half truth in it. this is an old story published in many magazines. mohanlal asked padmarajan to write a story for him and wanted to publish under his name. padmarajan agreed as mlal was like his younger brother and also a favourite eventhough mlals demand surprised him. mlal later told him 'allel venda' people are smart enough to understand professional writers style. the point of the incident is how much mlal in his mid twenties was in awe of good writers and also his desire to become a writer/creative person.

I got this doubt because unlike some other famous actors (example Kamalahassan), Lal has never written any story/screenplay.
I would have got the same doubt if Mammootty publishes a book. Saying this to indicate that the comment was not due to fandom.
