BUNUEL IN THE LABYRINTH OF THE TURTLES: first a bit of history. the surrealist filmmaker Bunuel releases his first film and it gets mired in controversy which leaves him out of work. he is asked to make a documentary on the lives in the las hurdes region of spain, one of the most impoverished villages of the country. in need of funds, Bunuel's friend who bought a lottery ticket promises to give him the money if he wins it. the friend wins it. Bunuel gets the money and he goes on to make Las Hurdes: Land Without Bread, considered one of the finest documentaries of human misery following a war (here the Spanish Civil War) this film is about bunuel making the documentary. the real-life incidents in bunuel's life are cell animated while what he sees through the camera is represented by the original portions from the documentary. a fine work indeed. bunuel was a surrealist and the visual showing of this feature, showing animated portions intercut with original footage, all in all gives a surrealistic feel. the advantage of using animation to show such post-modernist surreal or cubist art is that, animation requires probably 1/10th the budget that would be required to shoot this any other way. the movie does paint the artist in an unflattering stroke.

The Killing of a Sacred Deer:
High class stuff, suitable for high critics and big bujjis.
Slow movie, difficult to grasp, not able to understand it fully.
Maybe intellectuals would appreciate it better.
No clear explanations for many events, viewers need to understand and explain to ourselves.

Laurel Canyon:
Poor one, not worth watching.
