SOUL. There was a time animated movies were meant only for kids. Then came Pixar. While other studios still follow the candy approach, Pixar, once in a while keeps pushing their boundary (like Up, Inside Out and Coco) by taking on subjects that require a matured look on life. In their latest feature, Pixar goes to the extent of being existential. Soul might be the most philosophical animated movie till date. Joe is a jazz music teacher who is enthusiastic about life and music but has not yet made his mark, finally gets the opportunity of a lifetime, only to fall into a manhole and reach the Great Beyond (heaven) which he is not ready to accept. Running away, he breaks into the Great Before where souls are given personalities before being sent to the world. The mistaken identity of mentor puts him in charge 'finding the spark' for soul 22 who does not want to go to Earth. From there starts a journey for the two. Great music. Innovative animation. First Pixar movie with a black American lead. The usual theme taken by movies, from time immemorial is that of a protagonist/s who has a passion and then goes on an adventure that forces him to overcome all sorts of obstacles and finally achieve it ala The Alchemist. Here the movie takes more of a Buddhist view of life, life is more about purpose than passion, two words that the soul of each person and those that come in contact, confuse between. The movie goes on to claim that, while there is nothing wrong in having a passion and some do excel in achieving it, for those who do not there is always the purpose left. Sometimes, for the ones who have lost out on their passions (midlife crisis) 'just old living' is not so much a daily routine if peppered with a pinch of purpose in it. So there might be some (like me) who feel the movie's theme of creative choice is questionable. Anyways, the movie does make us face some relevant existential questions. Expecting the movie to be in the race for Best Animated Picture and/or Best Script in the coming Academy Awards. With the premise being carpe diem in a world wrecked by Covid, wouldn't be surprised it wins becomes the first animated movie to win the Best Picture itself. Watched it twice, will visit it again soon.

    Wonder Woman 84
    Poor one, disappointed.
Lame story and script, never expected such a poor sequel.
No effort taken to make a script matching expectations and hype.
The script has no depth, this script is told many times in Hollywood.
A stupid villain getting a great power which he cannot control is not enough for a Wonder Woman sequel.

    Soul:
    Nice movie, well made one.
'Inside Out' director once again delivered, though Soul could be rate below that.
The concept, script, story board, animations, direction and especially dialogues are all well done.
The scenes in the souls space were really interesting, wished to have more of the story to happen there.

    Ava:
Good crime thriller action movie, enjoyed it.
A female hit woman striking back on her boss after they part ways and she defends herself and strikes back.

    Catch Me If You Can:
Really good one from Spielberg, nice film, cinematic adaptation of the biopic of a conman in USA in the 1960s-70s.
De Caprio and Tom Hanks did very well.
Well written script and screenplay and very controlled direction.

    Sleepy Hollow:
Average horror film, one time watchable.

    We Own the Night:
    Decent crime thriller movie.
A father and son who are cops, fighting Russian drug mafia in New York.
The younger brother works with the Russians, but joins his family to hunt the mafia, once his family is attacked.

    Constantine:
    Average super natural thriller film.
A person with special abilities fights half demons who try to take over control of earth.

    Inglorious Basterds:
Good one from Tarantino, film set during WWII period.
A plot by the British and American to attack the Germans in a movie premiere, and one Jewish girl also made plans.
Film could have been better if Hitler was not added to the plot.

NOMADLAND. This is what you call poetry in motion. An awesome movie! After years of functioning, the 2008 recession closes down a gypsum plant in Nevada. Fern and her recently deceased husband used to work there. Suddenly the recession has turned her homeless (she prefers it 'houseless'). She buys a RV van and roams the country for work. The rest of the movie is her wandering journey, meeting nomads similar to her, all of them being just like her - in their 50's and 60's, suddenly without home and work. The movies stars Frances McDormand as Fern (her best performance alongwith the ones in Fargo and Three Billboards...). The nomads seen in the movie are real-life anti-capitalist, radical nomadists. There was this movie 'Into the Wild' where the vagabond protagonist leaves everything and heads into the wild; of course he takes it too seriously and dies at a young age. Here, it is not out of choice, but out of circumstances that these post retirement nomads have to take in such a wanderer lifestyle where they pick on occasional odd jobs for survival and live out the remainder of their lives in the van. This movie will definitely grab some nominations in the coming Oscar awards.
