52. Ezra
Theatre : INOX, Malad
Director : Jay K
Cast : Prithviraj Sukumaran, Priya Anand, Vijayaraghavan
Ezra is a technically well made and the recent best "horror film" Mollywood has produced. Prithviraj's stunning perfomance shouldered the movie throughout, especially in the poorly crafted climax sequences. Even Priya Anand did a good job as the female lead. Even though her dubbing was in sync, something felt out of place, the sound level of the dubbed voice was too high for even the tiniest movements of her lips. Vijayaraghavan, Tovino Thomas and Sudev Nair did good with the small parts they got. Sunny Wayne's voice for Jimson's Marquez gave more clarity and life to the character. But the voice I loved was Indrajith's - clear and crisp narration!
Technically, Ezra is excellent! Cinemarography was top class, the frames and lighting, everything looked lovely. The use of Dutch angles was a brilliant decision taken by the Director and Cinematographer! Even though I loved the way they used it in the initial parts and the use of Dutch angles enhances the viewer's experience at a subconscious level, I found it too repetitive and unwanted towards the second half, atleast they could have reduced it a bit. Editing had a fine rhythm to it and sound design was good. The sound levels were high but that is what helps the film succeed in those jumpscare sequences. The 5.1 Mix and the art direction was excellent! Recent best I have seen in any Malayalam film!
The twist was predictable and I pretty much got it during the initial 45 minutes itself!
Apart from many loopholes, a pretty okayish climax scene and a predictable twist to the tale, Ezra is a "technically well made" film!!
7/10
