    Default Veeram - Review

A truly ambitious and brave attempt from Jayaraj that disregards the existing norms in the industry. The choice of locations were apt and the technical side including the eye watering cinematography and gorgeous production design is among the best you have ever seen in Malayalam. Hence, there is no denying that it is a sumptuous visual experience, but the drama is not exactly riveting. The script appears to be more visual oriented and thus, you feel the characters and their relationships are not fleshed out properly.

In fact, the relationship of Chandu with the two main women, namely Kuttimani and Archa are shown hastily in the first half through some love making sequences. Further, the chief actors imported from Bollywood, despite trying their best fail with their lip-syncing. Kunal Kapoor impresses in intense sequences and looks the part of the warrior but fails in bringing to the fore the other shades of Chandu.

The key moments unfolding over “Sarpapattu” and “Theyyam” are a treat to watch and reasserts director’s fascination towards traditional art forms as well as his ability to frame it with finesse.

The sights and sounds of the film are truly worthy to be savoured but cannot help feeling that it is also a missed opportunity to create a truly memorable classic.
