Nice review....u missed out on the theatre details, status, rating etc
Ranjith’s affinity towards realistic milieu, northern kerala characters and their dialects can be seen in his new film as well. From the trailer s itself, one could easily make out that in terms of genre film is a continuation of the territory the director explored successfully with a careful blend of entertainment in criminally underrated Loham and the commercially successful Indian Rupee.
Puthan Panam doesn’t have enough meat in plot unlike the aforementioned films but the director’s signature is completely in place. The supporting characters are so nicely etched that they demand a separate movie. There’s a lovely scene where Mamukoya’s character’s dislike to unhygienic toilets is mentioned in a random conversation with Shenoy, the character played by Mammooty.
Mammooty makes good use of his screen presence and is definitely a rage in few bits like the confrontation scene at the start of the film. Swaraj Gramika has an equally important role in the film, but he is just about adequate compared to others. Ranjith’s writing gets particularly weak, when focus shifts to Muthu the character he essays. The Over the top introduction scene and more so a ridiculous song sequence that pops up in the latter half prove to be dampeners.
The film further suffers from a daunting length and pacing issues with characters like the one played by Baiju getting way too much screen time than they deserve. Like some of his most acclaimed films in recent times, Ranjith’s intentions are admirable here too, he wants to weave an engaging drama by retaining an authenticity throughout in the direction and writing. There are no black and white characters, even the policeman, Siddique is only doing is his job and could never be termed as a villain.
This is exactly reason why, Puthan panam jars everytime a director as surefooted as Ranjith tries to manipulate/spoon feed viewer, the scenes towards the climax are disappointing on this account. This is an imperfect film, but there is an attempt towards quality cinema that you cannot deny
