Mammootty to star in a period film based on Mamankam festival
Mollywood has several epic movies set to go on floors soon including Mohanlal's Mahabharatha, Prithviraj's Karnan and Tovino Thomas' Chengazhi Nambiar. Joining the bandwagon next will be megastar Mammootty, who has been roped in for a film based on the medieval fair Mamankam, which was celebrated every 12 years from 800 AD to 1755 AD.
The upcoming movie, which is directed by debutant Sajeev Pillai, is set in the 17th century, says a source close to the production team.
"It's the tale of the brave warriors of Malabar. During the Mamankam festival held at the banks of Bharathapuzha in Tirunavaya, soldiers from all over the country used to come together to wager battles and combat," the source explains. "This movie is about a brave leader and his loyal soldiers."
While the source says that Mammootty's character will only be revealed within a fortnight along with other cast members, the film will have the star in a look different from his previous such films including Pazhassi Raja and Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha.
Meanwhile, the actor is currently busy with Girish Damodhar's Uncle, and also has a schedule of Parole left. His next release will be the Tamil-Malayalam bilingual Streetlights, in which he plays a cop.
