    Kumbalangi Nights
slice-of-life is emerging as a genre by itself in Malayalam cinema and its most accomplished practitioner, writer Syam Pushkaran, is doing it with amazing consistency. this time, with another new filmmaker -- Madhu C. Narayanan.
the film is loosely tied in the initial segments and while the realism -- dialogue, performances and the general pace at which things proceed -- works fine, it takes its time to get to the point. with the latter half, the film comes on its own as the four brothers (soubin shahir is exceptional) make a home out of their unplastered house. it's a beautiful home where an American tourist can blend in, play her music and share the night's kanji with the others; a home where a Tamil widow is welcomed in with her new-born. at the OTHER home, Shammi (Fahadh Faasil in fine form, shuns the subtleties to deliver a deliciously showy performance) is slowly taking control of the all-women family he's married into. the characters are fleshed out and the build-up to Shammi's final outburst is terrific. the problem, though, is that these two stories don't always connect quite well. the film has an assortment of very original, all-heart segments. the ending is a bit off and if you are the kind of viewer who winds down films with questions like -- "so what was the story all about? what was the POINT of all this?" -- it could be a touch underwhelming. but this one's not about the big story or character arcs; it works as a lazy little backwater detour into the charming everyday-ness of life in Kumbalangi -- simple, bitter, sweet. you'll feel good.

Loved the part where Fahad manipulate the women in the family. That so nicely done.

    Very well put......

I don't think there is any other Indian movie industry that portrays life with so much honesty the way recent Malayalam movies have been doing. It needs courageous filmmakers and smart audience to appreciate the same, so more power to them!
