Promising posters,a well-cut trailer and an ensemble cast from the south movie scene alongside none other than Mollywood superstar Mohanlal were enough and more reasons for Rockline Productions maiden Mollywood venture 'Villain' to be a highly anticipated movie that was expected to take a huge opening in screens across Kerala.Ironically,the big hype will prove detrimental to the boxoffice fortune of the movie that is nothing more than a pale rehash of crime thrillers from the past,with a highly predictable storyline that's made worse with poor direction by B.Unnikrishnan.


The movie was promoted as a suspense thriller in the backdrop of investigation and I must open up that there wasn't any sort of thrills at any point in the narrative and the much expected suspense element too was missing,giving way for pleonastic philosophical conversations and guess works that even a 10 year old can pursue.The screenplay penned by Unnikrishnan himself is hollow and lacks detailing into the incidents that unfolds one after the other without the credible backdrop of a convincing explanation.


There are few good things about the movie like its top-classy frames,impressive acting performances and some neatly presented emotional sequences,but these alone coudln't save the movie from being a disappointment that's sure to struggle in the box-office once the initial rush on day one comes to an end.The need for such a huge star cast or even the presence of an actor of the caliber of Mohanlal and the proposed budget of more than 20 crores was surprising as the screenplay doesn't justify it at the first place.


Personally I felt that 'Grandmaster',from the combo of Bunni and Mohanlal was a much much better thriller on comparison with Villain that fell flat right from the word go.The first half of the movie was slightly better on comparison with a totally disoriented second half.


Coming to the performances,Mathew Manjooran was a cakewalk for an actor like Mohanlal who ensured that he doesn't disappoint at a single juncture of the storyline.Vishal gave a good supporting performance alongside Lalettan.Manju Warrier made her presence felt with few good acting bits.Hansika Motwani didn't have any trivial part in the storyline.Meka Srikanth was wasted.The supporting cast were fine tha includes notbale names like Siddique,Chemban Vinod and Raashi Khanna.


Frames by Manoj Paramahamsa and Ekambaram were brilliant and deserves a special mention.Editing by Shabeer Mohammed was good.Songs by 4Musics and background score by Sushin Shyam were adequate.


Overall,Villain is a disappointing offering from B.Unnikrishnan tht suffers big-time due to poor direction and half-baked writing.The movie may turn a watchable affair if you go with very low expectations,at your own risk!
