Good review
The blend of family sentiments and thrill is an art that is hard to master, Unnikrishnan in his fourth directorial venture with Mohanlal attempts to tread this tricky path, but the film, ends up as an underwhelming mish mash of two diverse genres.
Unnikrishnan has a thing for mysteries and film stays on course as long as the focus is on, investigation. The best scenes in the film are undoubtedly the ones in first half, in which, the protagonist shrewdly couples together circumstantial evidences to throw light on the criminal lurking in the dark. Unlike most of the forgettable thrillers, these portions have a thoroughly organic feel to it.
But the constant shift to sentimentality affects the intrigue , the film’s strongest portions attempt to build and makes its pace , uneven. Further the emotional portions in the film, inspite of the warm chemistry between Mohanlal and Manju warrier are done with a certain aloofness, genericness which makes it unable for one to invest in them.
The film completely loses track in the final thirty minutes or so as proceedings take a turn from a reasonably engaging thriller mode to a preachy, philosophical mode. The long-drawn out climax laden with philosophical lectures between the hero and villain, completely leaves you cold.
The casting is another prime area where Villain falls short. Hansika and Rashi Khanna, trapped in stereotypical roles and poor lip synching are hard to take seriously. Siddique and particularly Vishal (making the most of a thoroughly underwritten part) are the only actors in the ensemble, who manage to leave a lasting impression. Chemban Vinod gets couple of witty one liners.
Mohanlal, the actor, looks dashing in the grey beard and his portrayal has the usual essence but there are portions, especially at the start, where the actor seems confused.
Villain is not entirely unwatchable and there is a genuine effort from the makers to move away from the beaten path. But it cannot save the film form being an over long and over plotted mess that takes itself way too seriously.
