Poomaram - "A lackluster docu-fiction from Abrid Shine & Team"

The single "Njanum Njanumentalum" released back in November 2016 was an instant hit among the Keralites and 'Poomaram',which marked the comeback of evergreen hero Jayaram's son Kalidas into Malayalam cinema in the third movie by director Abrid Shine, became one among the most awaited films to come out from Mollywood in recent years.Eventhough the long delay did lower the expectations a bit,the movie was indeed a much sought after affair and finally managed to hit the screens across Kerala this weekend.
To start with,'Poomaram' is more or less a docu-fiction that presents a detailed account of the 5 day long prestigious MG University youth festival with focus on the well-know real life rivalry between the reputed Maharaja's college and St.Treesa's,taking its time to illustrate the preparation and presentation of various events like Mime,Poetry,Dance and mimics in as much detail as possible.
150 minutes of running time, for such a docu-fiction was tad too much and the heavy detailing of the events without any support of a solid screenplay backfired big time.In a nutshell,I must say that the movie failed to provide a satisfactory cinematic experience that one expects from the silverscreen, except for an aura of nostalgia for those who have been a part of the festival in real life.
Having been to these festivals before,I really felt that at least a 45 minutes of the events portrayed were unconvincing and the way the forced climax was conceived was highly cinematic, that lowered the impact that was expected. The lengthy conversations between Gautam, played by Kalidas and his father were too artificial and tedious to say the least. The police station sequence reminded of Abrid's own 'Action Hero Biju' and could have been cut short to improve the pace of the narrative.
The best thing about Poomaram is its music and background score that's undoubtedly among the best in recent times in Mollywood.Frames by Gnaanam too were impressive and worth mentioning.
Coming to the performances,Kalidas Jayaram didn't have much to perform in the very less screen time allotted to him, being over-shadowed by the array of newcomers who played their part equally good without any shades of being debutants.Cameos by Kunchako Boban and Meera Jasmine were fine.
Overall,Poomaram is a mediocre offering from Abrid Shine, but may turn a watchable flick owing to its neat performances, music and moments that evoke nostalgia.Make sure to lower the expectations or else you will hugely disappointed.
