Uncle - Review

Joy Mathew who stunned everyone with his 2012 thriller 'Shutter' is back with 'Uncle', this time just being the writer and giving the directorial duty to his prodigee, debutant Girish Damodar. To make things more exciting there is the presence of a Superstar in the form of Mammootty.

On the surface level, Uncle also talks about fake morality in the society just like Shutter. But the difference comes in narrative and the overall settings. Unlike the former, this one is more like a road movie where the main leads is in a journey for most of its runtime. The actual story unfolds while these two characters ends their journey and Joy Mathew, the writer takes charge from there. He succeeds in creating some tension moments in between their journey as well. The last 20-25 minutes of the movie is completely arresting and the movie slaps on the face of today's moral policing. Dialogues are hard hitting here but for a change those are uttered by nor the hero neither the heroine. Rather it is exchanged by a supporting character played by a brilliant Muthumani. The whole episode is clap worthy and makes you think about such incidents.

Technically the film is good with impressive work from Alagappan and Bijibal while the editing could have been little better. There is only one song in the film and that is captured well.

It is a cakewalk for an actor of Mammootty's caliber but still he makes his character unpredictable which is very important for the narrative. Karthika is convincing in his second outing after CIA and Joy Mathew is fine. But as said before it is Muthumani who gets the most to perform in the key situation and she comes up with one of her best performances.

Overall Uncle is a good comeback vehicle for Mammootty after a couple of disappointing flicks and this time the content and his character both speaks. Joy Mathew proves that he is not a one time wonder and makes sure he touched upon yet another relevant topic in his second film. Bring us more sir..!
