Eventhough hollywood has produced many memorable survival thrillers like 'Cast Away',Buried and '127 Hours'(atleast half a dozen being a part of my list of favourite films),the genre is relatively unexplored by Indian film-makers and when editor turned director Ajoy Verma and Mohanlal was joining hands to whip out one, expectations were high which somehow got reduced later owing to lackluster posters and promos.A desperate attempt to exploit the genre,Neerali is a clueless journey that's diffcult to survive for its running time of barely 2 hours.

Ajoy Verma has earlier directed two bollywood films S.R.K and Dus Tola, the latter being a poorly conceived remake of yesteryear Malayalam superhit "Ponmuttayidunna Thaaravu".This time too Ajoy has failed to generate any excitement on the minds of the audience, struggling big-time narrating a half-baked screenplay by debutant SajuThomas who surprisingly never cares to include any element of thrills in the so called "survival thriller".

The backstories involved in the narrative are hilariously unconvincing just the same way as the escape attempts by the protagonist of the storyline, enacted half-heartedly by Mohanlal. The talented actor looked highly artificial with his weird hairdo playing a heavily under-developed character of a gemologist named Sunny George. There's an array of unwanted characters in the storyline like the one played by Dileesh Pothen that disappears towards the climax of the movie.Nadia Moidu didn't have much to do except for desperately trying to revive memories of the movie 'Nokkatha Doorath Kannum Nattu'.

The production values looked terribly poor, the cinematography and cuts being still worse, altogether making this flick one among the most disappointing films to come out from mollywood in recent years.Stephen Devassy tried hard to evoke some sort of thrills with his 'Bahubali' inspired background score, but without any fruitful results.

Overall,Neerali is a disastrous cinematic experience that's best avoided.
