Amal Neerad has become a brand in Malayalam cinema with his technically sound and stylishly presented action entertainers like Big B and Iyyobinte Pusthakam.Eventhough his last trial Comrade In America was more or less a half-baked offering,the expectations surrounding Varathan was high,which the talented director has managed to keep in tact with this neatly crafted thriller that amuses with scintillating music,first-rate visuals,winsome narrative and above all a phenomenal performance from Fahadh Faasil.


A rock-solid screenplay by the duo Suhas-Sharfu acts as the backbone of this thoroughly enjoyable Amal Neerad film,that puts an end to the long wait for a well-conceived survival thriller in Mollywood.The cast and crew has accomplished in making the viewers a part of the proceedings,communicating the tensions and feelings of the lead characters within a short span of time.


The narrative touches the highly relevant topics of moral policing and voyeurism,doing full justice to the plot,employing technical and acting finesse which combined together makes this one among the best movies to come out from Mollywood thus calendar year.Amal has also managed to showcase his politics in a subtle manner without hurting the sentiments of any section of the society


The review wil be incomplete without mentioning the talent of Sushin Shyam who has produced a stellar background score that evokes goosebumps towards the esnd of the post interval session.Sushin was at his best,may it be the beautifully picturized songs like 'Nee' and 'Puthiyoru Pathayil' or the original score,making this altogether one among the best soundtracks in recent time from mollywood.Littil Swayamp who last amazed us with is picturesque frames in Anjali Menon's 'Koode' has done a brilliant job with the camera that offers an enticing viewing experience.Sound design by Tapas Nayak and cuts by Vivek Harshan too were impressive.


Fahadh Fazil was at his best and managed to pull out a superb performance as protagonist Abin which can be considered as one among his best performances till date.The versatility that the actor posess is unmatchable and a treat to experience from the big screen.Aishwarya Lakshmi impresses again with a top-notch act as the female lead who struggles around the creepy men who tries to breach her freedom in different manner.Sharafudheen was a revelation and amazed with a noteworthy act as the antagonist,something which the actor hasn't tried till now.Among others,Vijilesh Karayad,Dileesh Pothan etc played their respective roles well.


Overall,Varathan is a neatly crafted survival thriller that deserves a big screen watch at the earliest.Go for it!
