Only once in a while we get to witness such movies that makes us root for the characters,making us laugh and cry with the protagonists,inviting us for a journey that offers a roller-coaster of emotions.Devoid of any cinematic cliches and making use of raw emotions,96 is one such film that's certainly among the best romantic films to come out from Kollywood till date.


"96" presents the unadulterated love-story of Ram and Janu,who get to meet each other again at their batch reunion after a hiatus of 20 long years,with the narrative moving back and forth between the flashback and the present events quiet convincingly.The love that the protagonists share for each other has been established brilliantly by director Prem Kumar who makes use of music,silence and minimal dialogues to express the intense emotions rather than resorting to any sort of melodrama or cinematic gimmicks.


Elements of Nostalgia has been exploited skillfully,transporting us back to the 90's making us one among the characters in the movie.Ram and Janu will stay in our minds for a long time and credit must be given to Prem Kumar for the exquisite detailing of the characters which makes us a part of their world in no time.


Govind Vasanatha' melodious score and songs were simply outstanding and conveyed the intensity of emotions efficiently.The soundtrack gets to be a part of the narrative and the feel that it provides itself makes '96' a must watch cinematic experience.Yesteryear chartbusters of Ilaiyaraja have been recreated well as short solos that play important role in the narrative.Cinematography by N Shanmuga Sundaram deserves a special mention for all the brilliant frames.Cuts by R.Govindaraj were fine.


Vijay Sethupathi has already proved his competence as a brilliant actor and he continues to amaze with a highly poignant portrayal of principal character Ram with subtle emotions and mannerisms.Trisha Krishnan has done a memorable act as lead character Janu ,one among her finest performances on par with Jessy from 'Vinnaithandi Varuvaya'.Debutants Adithya Bhaskar and Gouri Kishan who played the younger age of Ram and Janu deserves a special mention for their whole-hearted performances.Rest of the cast were fine and did their part well.


Overall,96 is a briliantly narrated romance that's not to be missed from the cinemas.Grab your tickets and relish the beautiful romance between Ram and Janu !!
