Thanks....
It was February 1 in the year 1991, when Amaram, a movie depicting a passionate single parent from a modest background who dreams big about the future that awaits his daughter released. That Peranbu is releasing on the very same date years later might merely be a coincidence, but as Director Ram has said, it is one of the films he has watched and admired in his school days. No surprises!
28 years is a long time. And indeed a very long time as far as cinema is concerned. The kind of subjects explored and techniques used have changed tremendously and a variety of novel ways of story telling have developed.
Peranbu ventures into an unoccupied territory and deals with a father who tries to understand the struggles of his daughter who 'suffers' from cerebral palsy and that is not all. Specially abled people have different ways of conversing and emoting but they do have their needs like any other human being. How the father comes into terms with these intricacies of his special teenage daughter forms the crux of the story. No brownie points for revealing the storyline any further because it has to be experienced from the big screens!
Peranbu is intense and emotional yet subtle- that is a lethal combination. It is moving, gripping and entertaining. The film never slips into melodrama yet conveys the complex emotions through which the characters sustain.
'Anbu' means love and 'Peranbu' means love in its greatest form. The English title of the film reads 'resurrection'. These are very apt words to describe the movie.
Ram is among the extremely talented and most acclaimed directors of our times and this is rated as his best work till date. Yuvan Shankar Raja with his music and background score along with Theni Eswar's cinematography gives this Ram movie a world class feel.
Mammootty makes this movie worthy of being watched multiple times. There is no other actor who responds so well to the changing times and nuances of film making. He is exceptional and when Ram says that he would have simply dropped this project if Mammootty were not to act, there is not a bit of exaggeration. Sadhana is brilliant and her consistency is amazing. The rest of the cast including including Anjali and Anjali Ameer are brilliant as well.
To put it simply, Peranbu is one of the best films ever made in Indian cinema and one of the very few films in which every department works phenomenally well. Must watch!
