    Default Peranbode devarajan master

"Nature created everyone differently, but we treat them equally." - Ram's Peranbu is hard hitting.

The late Balu Mahendra, one of the greatest film makers of South India had once told Ram, his one time associate that when he makes movies on his own, he has to make at least one movie with Mammootty, the director's actor. Ram who was already spellbound watching Amaram, Bhoothakkannadi, Sukrutham etc took Balu Mahendra's words to his heart and waited for Mammootty for many years and then Peranbu happened.

Two years of waiting even after the shoot. Amazing reviews from International film festivals. The film makers of Tamil labelled it as one of the 4 or 5 greatest Tamil movies in the 80 years history of Tamil cinema. Rave reviews from media, critics and movie lovers since release. So the expectations were sky high when I watched Ram's Peranbu. It was indeed hard hitting. The movie is arguably the most daring attempt on Indian silver screen.

Peranbu is the travails of a cab driver Amudhavan in bringing up his differently abled daughter Papa and the difficulties he face while doing so. The struggle reforms Amudhavan as a human being. The movie is presented as 12 chapters each depicting 12 different facets and moods of nature. If Peranbu had ended at Chapter 11, it would have left our heart bleeding like Thaniyavarthanam, for me the most haunting movie ever.

Ram, one of the torch bearers of the new wave Tamil cinema has made a classic. He handled a very complex theme like a thespian. He took us out of our comfort zone and dared to present issues which even the greatest of film makers would have shied away. The movie is going to be discussed by the critics and connoisseurs for many years to come.

Theni Eeshwar's camera takes you to both a magical world and stark reality. Yuvan Sankar Raja's captivating music and background scores strike the right chord.

Thankameenkal Sadhana was amazing as Papa. People even wondered if she is physically disabled in real life! That's the ultimate tribute to her. Both Anjali and Anjali Ameer did full justice to their roles.

Superlatives take a beating when it comes to appreciating the performance of India's finest actor Mammootty as Amudhavan. Through Peranbu, the land of the great Sivaji Ganeshan and Kamal Hasan is treated to breathtaking world class acting by Mammootty. The emotions and expressions he bring to the screen are gut wrenching. His subtle microscopic acting is a masterclass for all students of cinema; his voice over, dialogues and sound modulation a unique tribute to a great language...a tribute that only he could give.

The journey of a girl and her father to find solace in a place where neither human beings interlude nor birds die will remain in our hearts forever. Hats off to Ram and producer Thenappan.
