De De Pyaar De has all the usual trappings of a crowd pleasing multiplex film firmly in place, yet I was pleasantly surprised by some of the detours the film took. The Akiv Ali directed film gathers momentum when it makes the (much needed) transition from a flippant rom com to a dysfunctional family drama.
Though not a patch on her performance in Sriram Raghavan?s Andhadhun, Tabu impresses yet again and takes away the finest moments in the film. And it is a big relief to see Ajay Devgn gladly embrace a part like this. The actor who had slowly started losing his way, loosens up a lot and delivers his most restrained and honest performance in recent times.
Rakul Preet Singh is a pretty face alright and tries to make the most of a sketchily written part, but her acting is so-so. On that note, the actors who play Devgn?s kids in the film fare infinitely better. The presence of credible actors such as Kumud Mishra and Jimmy Shergill elevate the film considerably in its second half, where the jokes begin to work.
De De Pyaar De, would have been a much better film had the makers made an effort to trim the film?s lousy former half. But the post intermissions do compensate for the
lack of a strong plot. It is a decent weekend option for those who enjoy light weight family dramas.
