What prompted you to take up Bibin Paul Samuel’s Aaha?
I haven’t done a sports film before, so this is my first time. And also vadamvali (tug of war), despite being played on an international level, is considered by Malayalis as our very own sport. Bibin and scriptwriter Tobit Chirayath have researched a lot about the sport and those playing it as well, and their intensive research reflects in the script, which I think has come out really well. That’s what got me excited to commit the film. In fact, we have a rich history playing the sport, especially the team Aaha Neeloor, on which the film is based on. It wasn’t an organised club or anything, it comprised of hardworking people who did manual labour and were passionate about the sport.
Physically too, it must be challenging doing the role?
Physically, yes, the film after all revolves around tug of war. There are calluses on my hands already from all the pulling of the rope. We are also tracing the history of the group, and the story will be presented through flashbacks. I will be seen in two getups in the film — as a 55-year-old and a 30-year-old. That was another exciting aspect. The film also has an exciting cast, with Ashwin K Kumar also in two getups and Amith Chakalakkal, who is a talent to look forward to in the industry.
