There are many reasons for the downfall:-

1) Heavy nepotism. Ippo thanne karan johar launched Saif Ali Khans son even though there might be many other talented aspiring newcomers

2) Aping hollywood and pale remakes like Lal Singh Chadda

3) Youth actors are not crowd pullers unlike the south industry

4) Lack of mass entertainers

5) Audience being selective of going to theatres.
