Default Mamangam ~ real cinemas review

    THEATER:

    CARNIVAL CINEMAS, GREENFIELD
    DECEMBER 12, SCREEN 2, 10:30 AM

    EXPECTATIONS:

" 0 " expectation due to continuous failed biggies in our industry.

    CROWD:

Almost full with few vacant seats in front rows.

    STORY, SCREENPLAY & DIRECTION

Mamangam has a base story which could have worked wonders if conveyed in a better way. I felt incompleteness at many areas. The presence of the person who wrote the script on the set could have really done wonders as these kind of period dramas demands it.

How can somebody alien convey the feel and idea of a person who has done research on a subject for such a long time?

Cannot call Padmakumar a failure as a director but the original script writer, director could have done better. If the team believed that he had no potential they could have kept experienced people to support him rather than throwing him out.

    MUSIC :

Apart from the first one, songs doesn't leave any kind of impression. The background score even for the passing scenes is good.

    ACTION :

Given the hype, it doesn't meet the expectations. Small budgeted movies has done better action sequences without rope affects that we see in Mamangam. What is the point in using ropes and making actors do stunt like this?

    THE MOVIE:

    First Half:

Apart from the rope sequences the first 10 to 15 minutes of the movie, heroes introduction is decent till the title cards gets displayed. Post the title cards, the film demands strong family emotional scenes as a build up towards the Mamanga Mela, but the absence of Mammootty sir for next 45 to 50 minutes is a major setback no matter what the box office output of this film is. Those scenes should have been trimmed with more presence of the hero which would have worked better for the film.

The movie moves in a very slow pace after the first 15 minutes and gets slightly better towards the interval and with the introduction of Mammooty sirs feminine character. Given all the hype and hoopla the feminine character looks incomplete despite Mammootty sir excelling in it. I really thought he would make a mess of it. Few of his dance steps were funny and reminds his dance steps from other movies.

First half is around 1 hr 15 min, out of which the lead actor?s absence is a major setback.

    Second Half:

The second half also starts off with the same slowness, gets better after 20 minutes or so promising a grand finale....but again gets slow and then ends up with an above average climax which I felt is apt given the emotional side worked out in the film.

The only question left out is despite keeping zero expectations, is this what we all expected from Malayalam?s biggest movie ever in terms of budget and number of days ?

    PERFORMANCES :

It is a cake walk role for Mammootty sir and he does it easily. Apart from couple of emotional scenes in second half, I don?t even remember any scenes which show the impact of the scenes worked out in the movie.

The female characters does not have anything to perform. Was Prachi really part of the movie?

The characters that we see on screen should leave a mark even after we leave the theatre and mamangam fails in it. Unnimukandan, the kid...everyone does their role well, but it doesnt end up as characters that we take back home.

Kunkan nair, Neeli, Chandu etc from Pazhassi Raja still lives within us and thats how characters, especially in period drams should be.

    CROWD RESPONSE & VERDICT:

Crowd was very quite throughout with couple of claps once the movie got over, probably by couple of fans. The only thing I heard from a viewer talking on phone was:

    ഫസ്റ്റ് ഹാഫ് കണ്ടപ്പം കൈയിൽ നിന്നും പോയി എന്ന് വിചാരിച്ചു , പക്ഷെ സെക്കന്റ് ഹാഫ് വളരെ നന്നായി.

Strictly an average film for the effort taken by the makers.

The biggest positive of this movie is that they haven't inserted unnecessary mass elements which are usually part of period dramas.

Inclusion of such elements could have created a major blow to the movie.
